DirectBuy of North Boston awards $50,000 home makeover to area resident

Posted in Boston on 02.03.10

STONEHAM, MA…

DirectBuy of North Boston, the home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, recently awarded $50,000 to Leominster resident James Hartung as part of the company’s national Home Makeover Program. Mr. Hartung was presented with the check on August 26 at the Stoneham area club.

“When I received the letter in the mail notifying me that I was DirectBuy’s $50,000 Home Makeover winner, I didn’t think it was real,” said Hartung. “It wasn’t until I received a call from the DirectBuy corporate headquarters that made me realize I had truly won.”

With his newfound fortune, Hartung has many home improvement projects in mind, but there’s one clear front-runner that he’s looking to begin this fall.

“I’ve always wanted a farmer’s porch that wraps around both sides of my home and thanks to DirectBuy’s Home Makeover contest, I can finally have an outdoor gathering place for friends and family to enjoy,” said Hartung.

Not only will the porch provide a fun outside retreat for friends and family members, but it will also help facilitate next year’s kitchen remodel. Hartung currently has a door in his kitchen that opens to the outside. The door divides up his kitchen, taking up valuable countertop and cabinet space. With the addition of his wrap-around porch, James will be able to move the door to a better location, allowing for more cabinetry and counter space along one of the kitchen walls.

Carl Krawczyk who operates the Boston North location was excited that his club was able to help someone from their community. “Every day, my wife Barb and I have loved having the opportunity to come to work and help families save money. So to be able to give Mr. Hartung a check for $50,000, well, that’s just the icing on the cake!” said Krawczyk.

Over the past few years, DirectBuy has distributed more than a half million dollars in prize money to both members and non-members as part of their Home Makeover Program, designed to help consumers create the home of their dreams.

The DirectBuy of Boston North club, located at 100A Fallon Road in Stoneham, offers consumers thousands of items, including kitchen cabinets, flat-screen televisions and major appliances from more than 700 top manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. Members enjoy a comfortable, welcoming setting and design club where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

To assist members with their home renovation projects, DirectBuy of Boston North employs interior designers and product specialists who are specially trained in one of five areas of merchandise: Home Furnishings, Home Improvement, Flooring, Entertainment/Outdoor, and Accessories. Additionally, members benefit from the use of a children’s play area, café and a member’s lounge to relax while shopping.

DirectBuy Membership

Consumers who are interested in joining DirectBuy of Boston North are encouraged to attend an exclusive Open House event, which is designed to educate families about DirectBuy’s unique business model.  The Open House also helps consumers better understand how DirectBuy members avoid traditional retail markup when purchasing brand-name merchandise.

Northeastern University Announces Date for the 2009 Massachusetts Family Business of the Year Awards

Posted in Massachussets on 03.02.10

BOSTON, January 26 — Northeastern University is pleased to announce that the 3rd annual Massachusetts Family Business of the Year Awards program will be held on April 29, 2009.

The awards program created two years ago in a partnership between Northeastern University’s Center for Family Business and The Family Firm Institute New England Chapter, promotes and highlights some of the great achievements of Massachusetts-based, family-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.

Northeastern University Dean Thomas Moore notes, “Given that family businesses create 78% of all new jobs, it seems more appropriate than ever in these tough economic times to acknowledge and support family businesses.  Family businesses are an important economic engine of the Commonwealth.  They account for 60% of total U.S. employment and with all the long-term contributions that family firms deliver to their employees, the economy, and the Commonwealth, it seems fitting to highlight and recognize their achievements and success.

Doug Baumoel, president of The Family Firm Institute, New England Chapter said, “Family business are key to an economic recovery.  Through the ups and downs of economic cycles, family businesses endeavor to support their families, employees and their communities.  It’s exciting that Northeastern University is continuing their Awards program as we believe that it is important to recognize family businesses for what they do.”

“With prior Award winners including Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture, Avedis Zildjian Co., and New England Coffee, this is an opportunity for family businesses, large and small, to be in good company”, adds Dean Moore.

Nominations and applications are currently being accepted for entry into this year’s competition and are available on-line at www.mafba.com.

Any Massachusetts-based, family-owned business that includes or included more than one generation is eligible for the award.  There are three award categories: companies with less than 50 employees, 50-250 employees, and for businesses with more than 250 full-time employees.  The awards will be presented at Northeastern University’s Henderson House in Weston, MA on April 29, 2009.  The deadline for applications is March 27, 2009.  Award winners will be chosen by a panel of independent judges comprised of industry experts, academicians, and peers, and will be evaluated based on:

    — Overall business success

    — Positive family and business linkage

    — Multi-generational family involvement

Awards and Recognition Make Boston Schools and Students Proud

Posted in Boston on 02.10.09

Awards always reflect high achievement and excellence. Winning an award or “just being nominated” for one is a huge boost to one’s ego. It demonstrates to the world just how hard a person or organization has been working to achieve superiority over others in the same field. Actors, scientists, novelists, corporations, sports teams and school districts are all examples of professionals or organizations that strive to win awards.

Boston Public Schools have, over the years, reaped the benefits of receiving awards and recognition. They have been able to prove, throughout time, that they are worthy of these acknowledgments. From students to individual schools to the school board, these schools are top-notch.

If you are planning to relocate your family, and you have a good job lined up in the Boston Schools area, enrolling your child in one of the Boston Schools would be a good idea. These centers of learning are well-known for their excellence in the business of educating children, as they have done so for centuries, now.

Many people are impressed by the amount of years an organization has been in business. Stores and restaurants boast signs bearing the year they were established. Even wine garners more appreciation based on how old it is.

One could, if it is so desired, base the excellence of a school system, like Boston Schools on how long it has been in existence. The Boston Latin School is the oldest public school – it was founded in 1635! Boston can also boast of having the oldest public elementary school – Mather School, founded in 1639. Boston Schools are members of the oldest public school system, organized in 1647. The city also has English High, the oldest public high school which opened its doors to students in 1821.

The prestige of a school system like the one that serves Boston Schools is indeed notable and recognizable in the fact that, if for no other reason, it has been around the longest. But of course, most of us would like to base our decision on enrolling in one of the Boston Schools on more than mere staying power. It would be helpful to know about some of the other achievements that Boston Schools have won.

Recently, two Boston Schools publications earned Awards of Excellence: the first Boston Public Schools Career and College Guide and The Boston Educator. This award exemplifies the commitment that the Boston Schools system upholds to communicating with its students, parents, and teachers.

Also of late, the mayor of Boston, and School Board traveled to New York City to accept the Broad Prize for Urban Education as the most improved urban school district in the country. The Broad Prize included $500,000 in scholarship money for BPS students. This was the Boston Schools fifth year as a finalist. Boston Schools have now earned a total of $1 million in scholarship money.

Obviously, Boston Schools not only have years and years of experience on their side, but also accolades for the work they continue to do in order to maintain their standard of excellence.
