It appears that Michael Finley is soon to land with the Boston Celtics, who are in need of adding some help to their roster as they gear up for a run in the playoffs.  With Kevin Garnett still not playing at the same level as before his injury and Paul Pierce banged up as well, the Celtics are in need of another scoring option.  Even at age 37, Finley might just provide a little bit of help, though it’s a move that won’t address the problems of an aging roster that the Celtics will have to deal with in the offseason.

For much of his career, Finley was a prolific scorer who frequently averaged more than 20 points a game for the season.  After his dominant scoring days were behind him, Finley made a smooth transition to being a bench scorer, helping the Spurs win the NBA Championship in 2006-07.  The Celtics seem to believe that he can bring his silky jump shot to their squad to bolster their lineup heading into the postseason, after the Cavs added Antawn Jamison to their lineup recently and the Magic continue to be a prominent team in the resurgent Eastern Conference.

But adding Finley to the lineup doesn’t address the Celtics’ general lack of athleticism throughout their lineup – something that even the lower seeds in the playoff push like the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls seem to have.  Finley may provide a viable scoring option for the Celtics off the bench, but it still seems that the Celtics are a team on the downslide after winning the championship a couple seasons ago.

What the move does do, however, is confirm the Celtics’ desire to win this season, which should continue to keep Boston Celtics tickets as one of the top ticketing options around the NBA as we move closer to the playoffs.  The Celtics also added Nate Robinson to their lineup, who can light up the scoreboard, and Finley could round out their bench moving forward, though there is no denying that Finley is no longer the same scorer that he has been in the past.

The need for the Celtics to win now is a pressing issue for a team that has a trio of older stars in Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.  With Allen’s contract expiring at the end of the season, it seems certain that he will be out of Boston and it’s unclear what the future of Garnett will be as he continues to recover from a significant knee injury.  After winning a championship following the 2007-08 season, the Celtics have since been surpassed in the East by the Cavs and the Magic, not to mention the up-and-coming Atlanta Hawks, who continue to improve.  With point guard Rajon Rondo developing into one of the top point guards in the league, the Celtics clearly sense that they have the talent level to head deep into the playoffs if they can add a couple of pieces that fit well with the ones they already have.

Michael Finley may not be enough to help the Celtics win another championship on his own, but it proves that the Celtics are not content with just a playoff berth and a first round exit.  Adding a veteran with championship experience and the willingness to play a role on a team with a plethora of stars certainly cannot hurt their chances.  If he can make just a big shot or two in the postseason, signing Finley will be well worth it for the Celtics, who could be facing rebuilding seasons following this year.

For owners of Boston Celtics playoff tickets, this is a magical time. Bostonâ??s leaders are certainly less experienced when it comes to actual NBA Finals experience. Indeed, Kevin Garnett has been there, as has Sam Cassell, and coach Doc Rivers saw some time as a player. However, they must summon their collective experience and lead this team into a Finals that will see them rekindle one of the greatest sports rivalries of all time. The Lakers are finally back in the Finals, and they are ready to push the Cs to their limits in game one. Their leadership comes in the form of three men who have all been to the NBA Finals many times before â?? Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, and Phil Jackson. If these three men can settle down the rest of the team, who have no Finals experience, then this team has a chance to win the first game and the entire series. The Celtics are definitely lacking in pure championship leadership. While their coach saw his share of time as a player, he is fairly green as far as coaches go when it comes to playoff experience. The Lakers have all the trump cards in this series. Derek Fisher has been an amazing addition to this young team, and his veteran leadership has paid dividends for the Lake show. Though his reasons for coming to the Lakers may have more been that of a relationship of convenience â?? Fisherâ??s daughter has cancer and the best doctors are in L.A. â?? he is now one of the most important pieces in a very efficient team. Phil Jackson is of course the Zen Master. It has been a long, hard road for Phil Jackson, and at times he has clashed with Kobe Bryant â?? even going so far as to write his tell-all book â?? but the two have since patched things up, and the team is better than ever, mostly due to the growth of Kobe Bryant. Kobe has taken up the banner of team leader, and he is running away with it. After putting up his first MVP season, Bryant has the Lakers positioned to win it all. Another title will complete his transformation from selfish gunslinger to team unifier and leader.

Standing 6′ 11″ and born May, 19 1976 in South Carolina, Kevin Garnett is regarded as one of the best all-around basketball players in the NBA. Kevin attended Farragut Career Academy and was the fifth player drafted in 1995 he also became the first NBA player drafted out of High School. With names like “The Big Ticket, “KG”, “Go-Go Gadget Arms”, “The Kid” and “The Franchise” Kevin enjoys entertaining his fans and does a great job getting the crowd hyped. I did enjoy when the Utah duo of Stockton to Malone perfected the pick and role play under coach Jerry Sloane and when Larry Bird was “The Man” of the Boston Celtics. And who can forget the hardcourt duel between Boston and Los Angeles, of Bird and Magic Johnson, of Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul Jabbar?

Being someone who once played the sport, I was amazed by both of these teams, the skills of their players, the tactics employed by their coaches and the way they played the game with so much determination and basketball savvy. Such qualities have made both teams the most successful teams in the NBA when it came to the number of championships they have won. The Lakers have 14 with the last one during the last year of the Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O’Neal partnership in th 2001-2002 season while the Celtics won it last year after a drought of 22 years. And being a Celtics fan, that was just a sweet, sweet triumph to savor.

The triumvirate of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett have showed that superstars can set aside their huge egos, get along rather well, and work for the common goal of the team, that of winning the championship. They have proven their critics wrong, and the big three want more, a lot more. And the man reponsible for bringing them in? Coach Doc Rivers should be credited for having the vision to pull this feat off.

During the start of this season, expectations have been high. Now that they have tasted how it felt to win a championship the next item in their agenda is to successfully defend their title. They started impressively, having accumulated a record of 8-2 during their first 10 games of the season with their last loss coming at the hands of the Denver Nuggets. Then they went on a franchise record 19 game winning streak which ended during Christmas Day when Bryant and the Lakers finally playing well to gain a great basketball result. Boston still owned the best win-loss record in the league with 27-3.

That suddenly changed as the next game, they were beaten by a struggling Golden State Warriors team. It was the first time that Boston suffered back-to-back defeats in the season.  It didn’t end there though. The team suddenly found themselves unable to get a win as they suffered defeats from low ranked teams like the New York Knicks and Charlotte Bobcats, aside from the losses against possible title contenders like the Portland Trailblazers, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers. Now their record is at 31-9 through 40 NBA games.

I cannot believe the misfortune that the team is into lately. Gone is the stingy Boston defense that limits its opponents ability to score. Gone is the Celtic pride that Garnett used to have when the team had its winning streak of 19 games. They seem to be like an average team playing an average game. And I do hope that Rivers can solve the mystery and fast. The season is now on its middle part, when teams grind out wins and team standings are starting to shape up in order to determine which team shall go to the playoffs. And if the Celtics really want to defend their crown and win the title, they better show it on the basketball court day in, day out and not just by plain lip service.

The highest score of the day was recorded by Ray Allen of the Celtics. He finished with 27 points. Celtics were at a season high 15 for 25 from 3 point range. In the record of 3 points scored against Heat in the past 21 seasons, this was the second time a team got away with  this kind of score. Paul Pierce scored 14 points and Kevin Garnett another 16 along with 13 rebounds to lead Boston to it’s winning total.

Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat was awarded his NBA Player of the Month award at half time. It was in a less than ideal situation that he took his award as his team was trailing by an alarming 57-34. Highest scorers for Heat remained wade (25 points), Daequan Cook (20 points) and  Michael Beasley (17 points and 11 rebounds).

The Boston team remained in control of the game from the very beginning, never letting Miami take the lead by the slightest margin. At first quarter they had a lead of 29-10 and it stayed in double figures through out the game. Boston Celtics (35-9) will play against Orlando (33-8) on Thursday. According to the basketball league results for 2009, so far these 2 teams are at the top of their game.

The third quarter entered into an exciting phase as in the last stages Miami’s basketball team got within 11 twice but House, who is a former Miami guard, shot back the Heat every time. he dribbled the ball along the court and shot a 20-foot jumper and scored a 3-pointer off a pass from Pierce. This gave a lead of 78-64 to Celtics by the time the 4th quarter started.

Allen was as aggressive as ever and there were nos signs of fatigue to be seen as one would have expected as he had attended President Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremony the day before and had had to walk in the cold for an hour to reach his seat. He scored off 3 shots which included two 3 pointers, taking Boston very quickly to a lead of 11-2.

Boston snuffed out all hope of Miami winning the match by an 8-0 run, just when Miami found itself in sight of an 11 in the final quarter. Garnett scored off a jumper, Allen scored consecutive 3 pointers. By the time only 3:56 were left and Celtics were leading 95-76, Miami fans left the arena as they lost all hope of their team redeeming themselves.

To further deflect any chances of Miami getting back into the game, Allen scored his fifth 3-pointer of the night soon as Boston got in possession of the ball. Miami’s worse undoing was a missed dunk taken by Shawn Marion. Perhaps Miami should learn from Boston how to score in basketball.
Miami was also out-rebounded by Boston 18-5 in the first quarter. Miami missed 8 out of 10 shots of the half.

Larry Bird’s impact on NBA basketball history was immediate. For the 1980 season Larry Bird led the Celtics to superstardom legacy. Bird was named the league’s Rookie of The Year and was voted onto the Eastern Conference All Star-Team. He was honored with this title all for all of his twelve seasons of his career in the NBA. He was scoring 12 points per game, 10 rebounds per game, an outstanding 143 steals and second in assists.

In Bird’s second professional season- he led the Celtics to the NBA Playoffs. Larry Bird helped the Celtics’ deficit by helping them overcome and winning the last three games, which propelled the Celtics into the NBA Finals. They defeated the Houston Rockets in six games.

In 1984 Bird earned the award for Most Valuable Player by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in a seven game final. The following year, the Boston Celtics would have another incredible winning year by defeating The Rockets in six games. Bird again was honored with the Finals MVP Award for that year, averaging 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

In 1987 Bird made his final appearance for the Celtics against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Detroit Pistons. That year the Celtics ended up losing to the unmatched Lakers in six games and to the Detroit Pistons in 1988.

Bird’s body continued to deteriorate to injuries to debilitating back problems and to bone spurs in his heels. Both these conditions would eventually lead to his retirement in 1992. Unwilling to stop due to injuries, he joined Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan to play in the United States basketball team for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Names the “Dream Team”- they defeated their competition to win the Gold Medal for the United States Basketball Olympic Team.

Larry Bird’s NBA honors include; elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame (1988),  NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986),  NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986),  NBA MVP ( 1984, 1985, 1986),  Nine-Time All-NBA First Team ( 1980-88),  All NBA Second Team (1990),  All-Defensive Second Team (1982, 1983, 1984),  NBA Rookie of The Year (1980),  One of the Fifty Greatest Players in NBA History (1996),  Olympic Gold Medalist (1992).
