Meditation Can Increase Gray Matter

Push-ups, crunches, gyms, personal trainers — people have many strategies for building bigger muscles and stronger bones. But what can one do to build a bigger brain? Now don’t get surprise if in school your children have a mediation period !!!

Now scientists all over the world believe that meditation can increase the depth of the cortical tissue in the brain. Thus this type of change or evolution of the brain can help the meditation practiser to increase the emotional stability, focus and sensory response.

The right orbito-frontal cortex, shown here, is  the area of the brain that appears to be enlarged due to meditation.

The set of researchers from Harvard, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Massachusetts General Hospital studied 44 people and divided them into two groups. Out of which the group1 were controlled with no meditation and the group2 each one with significant commonality that they were all extensively taught in the Buddhist Insight meditation practices. This meant that the subjects spent about 40 minutes or so each day in deep meditation. The result was that the people in the group2 had a significant increase in the cortical tissue and grey matter. The researchers found significantly larger cerebral measurements in meditators compared with controls, including larger volumes of the right hippocampus and increased gray matter in the right orbito-frontal cortex, the right thalamus and the left inferior temporal lobe. There were no regions where controls had significantly larger volumes or more gray matter than meditators. Using an MRI the researchers were able to monitor the changes brought about through regular meditation.

Boston Pack and Ship delivers for Ropes & Gray employees “Backpacks for the Homeless” project

BRAINTREE, MA and BOSTON, MAâ?¦

Back to school time of year means different things to different people. For Ropes & Gray lawyers and staff, it represents the time of year when they give backpacks of school supplies to school-age children at homeless shelters throughout Boston. Boston Pack and Ship, a Braintree-based small load shipping specialist, helped out in this cause, delivering 180 of those backpacks to a Boston homeless shelter.

â??Weâ??ve had a working relationship with Ropes & Gray for more than two decades. When we heard about the Backpack for the Homeless project, it was something we knew we wanted to be involved with,â? said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship.

Ropes & Gray employees began the â??Backpacks for the Homelessâ? initiative in 1999. Over the years, with the help of local sponsors and volunteers, the project has grown to the point where the group was creating backpacks for 13 Boston homeless shelters, including one with 180 school-age children (grades K-12).

â??In previous years, we had counselors from each shelter come to our offices and pick up the backpacks for the kids. But with 180 backpacks going to a specific shelter, that was going to be a bit much. Weâ??re very grateful to Boston Pack and Ship for volunteering a vehicle and their movers to take care of this delivery,â? said Susan Minor, one of the coordinators of this yearâ??s â??Backpacks for the Homelessâ? project.

Each backpack contains a variety of school supplies specific to each childâ??s grade. So while most backpacks will include your standardsâ??paper, pencils, rulers, glue sticks, etc.â??some will have items that their curriculum requires (e.g. 10th graders receiving a scientific calculator). In addition, each backpack contains an outfit for the first day of school (e.g. shirt and pants).

â??Living in a homeless shelter, their lives are challenging enough. We started this program so these children could start the school year feeling like most kids with the supplies they need and a brand new set of clothes that fit,â? said Minor.

Added Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship, â??We are delighted to be a part of this very worthwhile effort. The volunteers from Ropes & Gray who take part in this program are to be commended for taking this on every year. Itâ??s no small accomplishment to get supplies and clothes in the right sizes for all those kids and they do a great job in pulling it all together.â?

If you would like to make a monetary contribution or volunteer for next yearâ??s backpack project, please contact: backpackproject@ropesgray.com
