Crescent Ridge Dairy Wins “Green Packy” Award

Posted in Massachussets on 29.08.10

The Green Packy award, otherwise known as the Responsible Packaging Award, was presented to Crescent Ridge by Sustainable Bizness Practices for their commitment to using reusable, refillable, and returnable-to-the-store glass beverage (quart and 1/2 gallon size) bottles. Crescent Ridge was recognized with this coveted award for their service to 16 Whole Foods Markets in MA and RI.

The Green Packy awards were sponsored by Whole Foods Markets, Whole Food Markets Green Mission, United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) and the Food Trade Sustainability Leadership Association (FTSLA). According to Sustainable Bizness, the Green Packy awards are based on the Responsible Packaging Guidelines for the Organic Industry. It has been a collaboration headed by Whole Foods Markets Green Mission’s Responsible Packaging Forum at Natural Products Expos West and East over the past four years.

Recipients of the award must meet three key requirements in responsible packaging: ecological principles; transparency of content and process and extended product responsibility. Crescent Ridge was among only 19 others nationwide receiving a Green Packy award at Natural Products Expo West held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Mark Parrish, president and third generation of the Parrish family to run Crescent Ridge commented, “We are honored to receive the ‘Green Packy’ award. It’s a distinction that truly sets us apart from our competitors on the dairy shelves. Consumers today are much more savvy about packaging materials and their concern goes beyond recycling. They want to know that they are purchasing a product that has proven it has met sustainability criteria. Crescent Ridge has done just that. We’ve been providing milk and other beverages in reusable, returnable glass bottles since 1932. You could say we were in on the ground floor.”

Green to go. “Green” truck advertising moved to fast lane by Traffic Drivers Outdoor Advertising

Posted in Massachussets on 22.08.10

The Traffic Drivers Outdoor Advertising trucks make standard daily
deliveries. Putting ads on the sides of the vehicles does not impact fuel
consumption or emissions – this is not the case with competing mobile
billboard trucks that run for the sole purpose of showing ads.

“Truck-Side mobile billboards are popular in other parts of the country but
relatively unknown in New England where we operate,” said Glenn Anderson,
who founded Traffic Drivers.

Anderson added, “The beauty of our mobile billboards is that they cause no
environmental harm while maybe even providing some entertainment for
motorists. Advertisers have the size and visibility benefits of a billboard,
but it’s not a static, stationary visual that blends into the scenery over
time. Mobile billboards get noticed because they are different, unexpected,
and right there when you’re stuck at a light, in traffic, or on the
highway.”

Traffic Drivers mobile billboards are about eight feet high and range from
20 to 50 feet in length. But while slightly smaller than a stationary
billboard, they dwarf them in price. The average billboard on major highways
in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut such as Route 95, the
Expressway or the Mass Pike Extension costs as much as $15,000-$25,000 per
month. On average, an ad on 3 sides of a Traffic Drivers truck is under
$2,000 a month and gives an advertiser exposure both on the highway and in
local towns or cities.

Some of Traffic Drivers initial clients include: Route 44 Toyota-Hyundai in
Raynham, Mass.; AJ Marks Jewelers in Hyannis and Wareham, Mass.; Hy-Line
Cruises out of Hyannis, Mass.; Southern New Hampshire University out of
Manchester, NH; and Santa’s Village of Jefferson, New Hampshire.

Traffic Drivers Mobile Billboards has agreements with several commercial
trucking companies, with routes covering Massachusetts, Rhode Island and
Connecticut. Since these trucks run on consistent delivery routes on both
local roads and highways, Traffic Drivers can target a specific geographic
area.

“When you’re in the tourism business on the Cape, you are competing with
literally hundreds of other businesses,” said Phillip Scudder, vice
president of marketing at Hy-Line Cruises. “The mobile billboard campaign
put together by Traffic Drivers will help keep us top-of-mind for tourists
and the locals, and that’s absolutely critical as we head into tourist
season.”
”In an increasingly Internet focused advertising world”, Anderson notes,
“Studies show that Out of Home Advertising is still one of the fastest
growing segments in the advertising industry. Mobile Billboards are the most
cost-effective advertising option out there, at an average Cost per Thousand
(CPM) of under $2.”

”We knew businesses who wanted billboard advertising in these markets, and
it was either not available or way out of their budget,” said Anderson. “We
saw a need in the market and decided to fill it. Truck-side billboards are
an excellent branding tool and we’re excited to be able to offer them.”

Traffic Drivers Mobile Billboards provides the full range of strategic
planning and creative services to take mobile billboard campaigns from
design to printing and finally installation. In addition, Traffic Drivers
uses a variety of tools and tactics such as vanity phone numbers, landing
pages and text campaigns to drive traffic to advertisers and measure
results. GPS reports are also available as proof of performance.

Weston resident and builder constructs ENERGY STAR-certified, “dream green home” in Weston

Posted in Massachussets on 29.06.10

WESTON AND WALTHAM, MAâ?¦

As president of Meyer Homes, Craig Meyer, a Weston resident, builds upscale homes and communities that maintain the integrity of the environment. The completion of his latest project, a 12-room colonial located at 42 Coburn Road in Weston, takes on an added significance because itâ??s not only in his hometown of Weston, but it is Meyer Homesâ?? first project in partnership with the Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program.

The Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program is a new construction program based on an energy efficiency standard developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15 percent more energy-efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC).

â??The term â??greenâ?? has been thrown quite around these days without a clear cut definition of what that actually means,â? said Meyer. â??Partnering with the Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program on this project means that there are standards the home has to meet to be certified as energy-efficient or green. Iâ??m proud to say that this home, built in my hometown of Weston, meets those specifications.â?

The program has specific energy efficiency standards above and beyond the Massachusetts building code which are enforced during the design and construction of the home by independent inspectors. At the completion of construction, the inspectors give the home a HERS rating which grades the increased energy efficiency of the home relative to non ENERGY STAR certified homes. The benefits to homeowners include savings on heating and cooling costs, a more comfortable and healthy home with reduced drafts and noise, and a home with less of an impact on the environment

Some of the performance features that distinguish an ENERGY STAR home from the average quality home are:

Enhanced Insulation – Higher insulation levels in walls, floors, and attics result in better energy performance and improved homeowner comfort. The insulation value of windows and doors is also an important determinant of comfort. Air Sealing – Simply caulking, foaming, and gasketing the holes and gaps in the heated building envelope can reduce annual heat loss and utility bills by more than 15 percent. Ventilation – All ENERGY STAR homes come equipped with mechanical ventilation, which ensures a continuous supply of fresh air to the home. High-Efficiency Appliances – ENERGY STAR homes typically have high-efficiency household appliances, lighting, and heating and cooling systems, which use less energy to perform the same job.

In addition to being ENERGY STAR-certified, the home at 42 Coburn Road in Weston features four bedrooms, five full and two half baths, has more than 5,300 square feet of living space and is walking distance to Weston Center. Built with attention to detail and high end finishes, the home also includes a walkout lower level with exercise room, media room and game room with large fireplace.

â??Building greener homes is extremely important but at the end of the day, we also want to build good homes that our customers love. With ENERGY STARâ??s New Homes program providing a measurable standard for energy-efficiency, weâ??re able to do both,â? said Meyer.

The home lists for $2,300,000. Kathleen Shepard and Georgia Foote of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Weston are the listing brokers. They can be reached at (617) 417-5752 or Kathleen.Shepard@nemoves.com.

In addition to being a Weston resident and the principal of Meyer Homes, Craig Meyer is the current president of the Builders Association of Greater Boston (BAGB) and a Certified Green Professional. Heâ??s received numerous industry awards, most recently: Greater Boston Builder of the Year (BAGB); Prism Award for Best Single Family Design over $1m and Community Service Award for Dream House (BAGB); and the Connecticut Home Builders Association Award for Best Traditional Subdivision, Best $500,000-$700,000 Home and Best Luxury Home.

A Green Moo-vement…

Posted in Massachussets on 26.06.10

SHARON, MAâ?¦ Long before it was hip to be green, Crescent Ridge Dairy embraced green practices by selling its milk and juices in recyclable half-gallon glass bottles. Unlike plastic milk jugs, which must go to the recycle bin after one use, the specially produced glass bottles in which Crescent Ridge milk and juice products are bottled can be washed and re-used before finally heading off to the glass recycle bin.

â??We believe our milks and juices taste better coming from a glass bottle and thatâ??s why we sell it that way. A wonderful byproduct of that, thanks to the high-powered washing and sterilizing process we have at the Dairy, is that these specially produced bottles have a shelf life of 150 round trips, which covers a couple of years. That means the 900,000 half gallons of milk and juice we sell in bottles each year saves some recycling plant or landfill the time and expense of recycling 450,000 gallons in plastic containers,â? said Mark Parrish, president and third generation of the Parrish family to run Crescent Ridge Dairy.

In addition to using recyclable glass bottles, Crescent Ridge Dairy preserves 45 acres of open space at its headquarters in Sharon, Massachusetts. Instead of additional office space or other development, Crescent Ridge Dairy preserves this land for the cows that make the annual pilgrimage from the Howrigan Farm in Vermontâ??adding greatly to the customersâ?? enjoyment of a trip to the dairy.

â??Our dairy makes an overall effort to run a greener operation. Paper used by our corporate offices is recycled, as are the cardboard boxes we use. The motor oil used by our trucks is recycled and we even collect the metal from the trucksâ??copper, aluminum and other odd scrapsâ??and give it to a metal dealer. If our customers are recycling the plastic tops to the milk and juice, weâ??re running a fairly green operation from beginning to the end of the process,â? said Parrish.

Crescent Ridge Dairy provides home delivery of all natural, rBST hormone-free whole, 1%, 2% and non-fat milk and more than 150 other top quality food items to more than 100 communities in the Boston area. All milk is pasteurized, homogenized and bottled in environmentally friendly glass bottles.

Crescent Ridge Dairy also sells its world-famous ice creamsâ??named one of the 10 best ice creams in the world by The National Geographicâ??at its â??dairy barsâ? in Sharon, Massachusetts at 355 Bay Road and 176 South Franklin Street (Route 37) in Holbrook, Massachusetts and via home delivery. Dairy bars are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Holbrook dairy bar is currently closed but will reopen on April 15.

Crescent Ridge Dairy has been named a â??Dairy of Distinctionâ? by the Massachusetts Farm Bureau and was the recipient of the 2007 Massachusetts Family Business award given by the Northeastern University Center for Family Business and the Family Firm Instituteâ??s New England Chapter.

Working with Green Custom Home Builders

Posted in Massachussets on 10.06.10

In most recent years, the buzzword that has gained much popularity and familiarity in the home building and construction industries is the term Green Building. Contrary to what others may think, the concept of green building is not entirely new and has been around since the early 1970s after a group of custom home builders and building designers formed an alliance focusing on energy and resources conservation in the building and construction industry.

Since then, the growing global concerns for slowly depleting resources and increasing environmental issues have triggered the world to focus once more on these green building initiatives. The trend continues to build up as more and more homeowners and investors are trying to incorporate green building elements into their projects. Contractors are now becoming Green Custom Home Builders while realtors are slowly changing the way they call themselves to Designated Green Agents.

Whether you are located up north in Alaska or anywhere near the Boston, Massachusetts area, homeowners are becoming more attracted in the prospect of renovating or remodeling their homes using green building principles to make them more energy-efficient and less expensive to maintain. What seems to be a fad during the early years has now become a necessary undertaking that even the US government will provide tax breaks to homeowners converting to green homes.

What are Green Custom Home Builders?

Custom home builders embracing green building methods are focusing in designs and building methods that will create an energy efficient and green environment for homes and buildings. Some of these methods include the following:

* Recycling of previous building materials during a home improvement or a home remodeling project. Depending on the extent and nature of the project, green custom home builders can utilize up to 90 percent of previous materials and turn them into something new.

* The creation of a living roof for a new or a remodeled structure. A living roof involves the use of real, live shrubs, trees, turf and other plants that will act as a water barrier and a better insulation for the roof.

* The use of innovative methods and systems for heating, cooling and lighting that will consume the least amount of electrical energy and other resources.

* Green custom home builders will also make use of alternative materials such as cotton, bamboo or wool which are more quickly renewing than synthetic materials. On top of this, the green home builder will opt to buy available materials locally in support of the economy.

Why Go Green?

The most important feature of green building methods is the use of methods and systems that will consume the least energy requirements. A green custom home builder takes this into serious consideration and will design and build homes that minimize consumption of these materials that would have the least negative effect on the natural environment.

Green homes are more environment-friendly and would be easier to sustain. Some of the methods used in green building maximizes reliance on renewable energy resources like wind, solar or water to make the home more sustainable, economical, safe for the environment, and healthier for the homeowner and his household. With the US government and private entities slowly adopting green building methods and techniques, this will eventually become the mainstream standard in the home building industry.

A majority of homeowners have the impression that go green would entail much cost and may be impractical to implement. Although the cost of materials and other green building elements are much higher than standard practices, the cost savings down the road would be much more beneficial for the homeowners in the long run. An extra initial investment at the start when building or renovating to green building techniques would eventually gain up to 10 times in savings later on.

Investing in home remodeling and renovation, while working with green custom home builders, can create a significantly positive effect not only for the environment but for the homeowner and his household’s way of life as well.

Roger James Martin is a fully licensed General Contractor and Team Leader for Divisions Unlimited Inc, an environmentally conscious Custom Home Builder specializing in new custom home construction, custom home remodeling, kitchen remodeling, and bathroom remodeling for residential or light commercial properties.

Directbuy of Boston South Provides One-stop Shopping Solution for Green Building Materials and Appliances

Posted in Boston on 09.02.10

ROCKLAND, MA…

There’s a misconception among many consumers that buying “green” refers strictly to products made of natural materials. While that’s part of the equation, there’s much more to it. Like appliances and lighting that last longer and use less power to run. Or plumbing that requires less water. At DirectBuy of Boston South, members not only have the opportunity to purchase the full spectrum of green products under one roof, but they also can save some “green” buy paying manufacturer-direct prices.

Some of the green products available to DirectBuy members include:

Faucets and plumbing fixtures that offer low consumption

Natural cork flooring and underlayments

Flooring made of renewable natural bamboo

Lighting and ceiling fans with Energy Star ratings

Energy Star compliant kitchen appliances, washers and dryers

Cabinets treated with low-voc, LEED-compliant stains

Bedroom, dining room, living furniture manufactured by members of the Sustainable Furniture Council; many of these pieces are made from natural fibers, use eco-friendly foam and contain organic, halogen-free fire retardants.

“Consumers are always being encouraged to make ‘greener’ purchases, but there’s no real road map as to where to make these purchases and whether or not what they do buy is green,” said John Massaria, owner of DirectBuy of Boston South. “The green products our members can buy through DirectBuy have been rated by recognized authorities like Energy Star, LEED and the Sustainable Furniture Council, so you know the green purchase you’re making is part of the solution.”

Energy Star ratings refer to the U.S.-government backed program ranking the energy efficiency of products. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a voluntary green building rating system, which is a consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance sustainable buildings. The Sustainable Furniture Council is a non-profit balanced coalition of manufacturers, retailers and consumers offering a public tagging program to identify good “green” choices.

“We all know we should be making greener purchases, particularly when it comes to products we use in our everyday lives like lighting and appliances. Unfortunately, making those wiser choices can be quite costly. By making all these green options available at DirectBuy, we give our members the choice to save money and valuable natural resources,” said Massaria.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. DirectBuy of Boston South, conveniently located at 11A Commerce Road in Rockland, Massachusetts, offers consumers a comfortable, welcoming setting where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

5 Key Boston Celtics Players That Won Gold for the Green and White

Posted in Boston on 08.02.10

Some sports teams epitomize excellence. For instance, the Boston Celtics are the New York Yankees of the NBA. In fact, the Celtics have been victorious in 17 NBA championship games, which is more than any other team in the history of the league! Their first championship was during the 1956-1957 season, and their most recent one was during the 2007-2008 season. In fact, the Celtics even won a record eight NBA championships in a row, from 1959-1966.

Throughout their history, key Celtics players have helped to maintain the squad’s winning tradition. Here are some players whose jerseys the team has retired:

Larry Bird #33 (number retired in February, 1993)

Bird was indeed one of the “best of the best” in the Celtics history. The Celtics won three NBA championships with Bird (1981, 1984, and 1986). Bird became renowned throughout his career, for his consistency and work ethic. He became the Most Valuable Player of the NBA, from 1984 to 1986. In addition, the NBA named Bird as the league’s “Rookie of the Year,” in 1980. Bird achieved several successes with the Celtics, including the top Free Throw Percentage (.886), the second most career points (21,791), and the third most career assists (5,695).

Bob Cousey #14 (number retired in October, 1963)

Cousey became renowned for his passing and playmaking in the NBA. Nicknamed “The Houdini of the Hardwood,” Cousey played each of his 13 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics. Bob Cousey became the MVP of the Celtics in 1957, and the NBA named him to 13 All-Star Squads. Of the total 17 NBA Championships that the Celtics have earned in their history, Cousey played on six championship teams (1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1963).
