Internet Radio: A Free Format For All

Posted in Radio on 09.03.10

The Internet has evolved and made many changes in our culture including personal MySpace pages, individual blogs, the way we trade information as well as the way the public finds and listens to music.

One of the upcoming and most popular formats is Internet Radio. Let’s discuss an Internet station, www.ilike2rock.net, who promotes, plays and exclusively features independent artists and their music.

Internet radio stations have been online for more than three years and offer listeners an alternative to “subscription radio” and commercial radio because of the eclectic music formats and unique opportunities for independent bands. The music is being brought to the forefront with stations like www.ilike2rock.net.

I spoke with DJ Tom of ilike2rock.net about the radio station and why it is important, not only the bands and individual artists they promote, but to the public as well.

”First and foremost, it is all about the music,” explained DJ Tom. “We offer a chance for the independent artists to submit their music free to us and to do that, they just go to our site and submit the music through a resource called “Music Submit” (we have an exclusive agreement with them). “Music Submit” allows bands and artists to submit band bios’, media kits and of course, the music, and this service in turn helps the bands by promoting them on ezines, other Internet radio stations, blogs and music related web sites.”

And www.ilike2rock.com adds even more to the table. I asked DJ Tom to elaborate.

”This gives the independent band or artist a unique opportunity to be heard with free exposure on our home page to reach their target audience and a chance for the band to attain new fans. We will also showcase bands in our “Talent Showcase,” keeping the band active on our play list. We also use the artists own promotional material (blogs, YouTube, My Space) and link up with them within our web site structure and we even create ring tones for them.”

There is a free program on the site to download called “Destiny Music Player” so you can tune in to the station and other Internet radio stations. It is similar to many of the music players for computers and is very easy to use and navigate.

Tired of the same format from your local radio station? Tune in ilike2rock and you can add more than 150 (and counting) independent bands and artists to your music play list. I spoke to DJ Tom about some of the bands they play and promote.

”This is what is the most exciting to me, we play the independent bands that submit to us (and Music Submit), from all kinds of musical genres and it is a free format, for both the listener and the bands. I am very excited for all our bands and artists. Some of the bands we promote are Hypnogaja, which supplied background music for the hit television on FX called “Dirt,” Black Frog, who have played at the Sturgis Bike Rally and Hide From Cleo, one of Michigan’s hottest bands and we promote all the bands equally.”

I was very impressed with DJ Tom and I too am excited to find new bands to listen to on the Internet. After all, it is always about the music.

Internet Talk Radio ? a Powerful Advertising Medium

Posted in Radio on 08.03.10

Advertising, a one-way communication with the purpose of informing potential customers about products and services and how to obtain them, is probably an essential function of any company to push their products in the market. Every major medium, with the examples of newspapers, television, radio, movies, magazines, video games etc. is already being used for the purpose of advertising.

All advertising mediums, however, are not as successful, or rather efficient for the purpose. In other words, choosing a proper and effective advertising media is an important basic preliminary. A medium, which is experiencing a trend of consumers shifting away from it, would be a bad advertising medium to choose in the long run. Rather, the medium, which is en vogue and experiencing a gradual or rapid trend shift towards it, would be more effective for advertising as it has the opportunity of a greater reach.

Newspapers, television, movies and magazines have been some of the stable advertising media for a long time. Radio, as we had in earlier days, is rapidly losing popularity. It must be said that the stable media mentioned previously is also suffering from trend shift but not as much as the radio. And it’s all because of a newer media that has recently taken the advertising media world by storm. It’s none other than the World Wide Web. Yes, internet, as we love to call it, is growing popular with every passing moment and newer technologies, easier access to centralized data and variety of cross demographic interests are attracting more and more people into the web.

This essentially makes internet a widely sought after advertising media of the new generation entrepreneurs. One of the latest wonders of the internet as an advertising media is the inception of internet talk radio. Advertising on the internet talk radio is similar to advertising on the old-age radio, except that its more powerful. A recent arbitration report states that over fifty percent of internet users consume streaming media and in the last three years, the number of Americans using internet radio has almost quadrupled. Moreover, Americans now seem to spend less time with television and print due to their time spent on the internet. Almost fifty six percent of the internet radio users have rated the media as new and fresh. All these definitely make internet radio the talk of the next generation advertising medium.

These factors help the advertisers with more precise targeting opportunities and get exact numbers of impressions delivered. Advertising on internet radio is multi-faceted. There are scopes to combine audio ads with synchronized banners and buttons to maximize visibility and retain attention. It is also more actionable as the listeners pay attention and the business site is just a click away. All these functionalities, together as a package, cannot be found in any other advertising media.

Catering to the tech-savvy, educated, affluent professionals from 20s to 50s with large disposable income who are comfortable spending online, the internet radio is fast becoming a very powerful advertising media.

Is it Death for Niche Internet Radio

Posted in Radio on 27.02.10

Eyes Of The Poet Radio occupies a narrow niche in the world of Internet radio. The station streams New Age and Ambient music along with audio poetry, interviews, and information about books. “The original idea behind creating the station was to give audio poetry a chance to be heard, for free, anywhere in the world,” according to Brian Douthit, owner of Eyes Of The Poet Radio. Poetry isn’t one of those high-demand, blockbuster sellers that consumers clamor for on a daily basis. For most people, poetry is a once in a while sampling, if they even choose to listen at all. Douthit chose to broadcast the audio poetry with New Age and Ambient music believing that the music wouldn’t crowd out the poetry. It’s been a good fit, but Eyes Of The Poet Radio is unique, and “unique” in the Internet radio business means fewer listeners. “I’m not really concerned about how many listeners I have,” says Douthit, “I’m just glad the station exists for those who want to listen. It’s very much ‘art for art’s sake‘.”

Eyes Of The Poet Radio may soon be off the air. On March 2nd, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) announced its determination of the new royalty rate increases Internet radio broadcasters must pay to license music. Although this is the year 2007, the new rate increase also applies to 2006, and continues to increase each year through 2010. These rates apply to each song played on Internet radio, to each listener. In addition to the new rate increases, the CRB added a minimum fee of $500 per channel, per year.

“In my opinion, this new rate structure is just brilliant,” says Douthit. “It’s designed to kill off most of Internet radio as we know it. Really, it’s the plan of a true mastermind.” Douthit points out that the large fees collected from 2006 along with increased fees for 2007 will bankrupt, or financially cripple, most large Internet radio providers such as Yahoo, AOL, and those like them who have large audiences. The $500 yearly fee per channel is aimed at the small, niche stations like Eyes Of The Poet Radio. “For me, the additional fees could bring my total costs to $1000 per year,” Douthit adds. “It’s enough to make me say, ‘Hey, this is getting serious!’ And it makes me ask myself if operating a small Internet radio station is really worth it.” Douthit receives little or no income from operating his station- a fact of life for most small broadcasters on the Internet. The new $500 fee is enough to stop most small broadcasters from operating, and enough to prevent new broadcasters from even starting. “It’s almost as if someone asked how to tackle both the large and small broadcasters?” says Douthit, “This new rate structure enacted by the CRB is how.”

The Best Internet Radio Stations: Jango.com, Finetune, Slacker, Imeem, Mog, Last.fm and Pandora

Posted in Radio on 26.02.10

It’s intimidating trying to find the best internet radio stations, right? Whether you’re bored at work or simply a couch potato at home, there is now the mysterious world of internet radio meets social networking. Yup, you’ve heard about all this nonsense with “friend recommendations” and “streaming playlists”, yea? Have you seen the plethora of free internet radio options when taking on this arduous task? Jango.com, Finetune, Meemix, Slacker, Imeem, Deezer, MOG, Last.fm, Pandora, Haystack etc. Naturally, these are all internet avenues to finding brand new music or just kicking back to enjoy non-terrestrial or satellite (Sirius, XM) radio. But which one should you use?

Well, that’s difficult to answer as each one tries to update it’s sticky features almost on a weekly basis. Pandora and Last.fm are consideredjango2.JPG the dinosaurs of this social realm. The more recent entries such as Jango, Meemix (Israel based), and Deezer (French based) are vying for distinct market share in what’s now becoming a crowded internet category. Above all else, the controversy of traditional royalty payments to recording artists by these social startups has come head to head. Anyhow, here’s the breakdown of internet radio and social networking:

Pandora.com internet radio is easy enough in that is just streams music and you click “yes I like”, “no I don’t like” – from this is formulates a channel to your deepest satisfaction. The older demographic (25-50) would favor this portal because these folks have little time to instant message, add songs, trade information, and network with their “friends” group. There is no social network option with Pandora.

Last.fm is the Viacom owned behemoth based in London. It has a large fanbase sharing similar interests in destinations like Myspace and Facebook. This site is definitely all about the social networking! Since they held the spotlight for the past couple of years, the major record labels and music publishers want them to pay royalties..and pay BIG!

Jango.com is brand new to the internet radio scene and I can tell you I met with the founders recently in their Soho, NY offices. They have a polished Web 2.0 presentation, high quality streaming, and a good work ethic. Again, this portal is for the youth oriented user as you can click on other members’ similar songs/playlists in real time. Each time you select or search music/artists, alternative song choices/soundalikes/same taste friends appear all over your screen! Eventually you’ll tailor an internet radio station or stations to your exact liking with only the same old songs you’ve always loved. Isn’t that just ironic? But Jango looks like a promising company with large aspirations.

Imeem.com just harnessed the rights to broadcast all Sony-BMG music artists. In return, the major music conglomerate gets a cut of ad monies placed in the Imeem radio players that stream your music. Once again, they put emphasis on sharing tastes and social networking.

Meemix.com is another brand new entrant and has yet to really get beyond Alpha phase. They’re behind in the pack at this point.

Finetune.com features major label artist bookmarks (Coldplay) on it homepage if that’s any consolation? Like some of the others, this company made it a point to create embed players for Myspace and Facebook. In small part, they also insist on administering some playlists themselves from data compiled by….whatever method they choose I guess. Algorithms are a funny thing. Who knows how they really work?

MOG.com has instituted not only internet radio streaming but now MOG TV. Now you can watch 400,000 more music videos online with playlists dissected by users galore. Is that good or bad? They have that Rhapsody.com thing going too headed by editorial chief Michael Goldberg. This Bay Area 2.0 is a bit useless and cluttered but who can blame them for trying.

Haystack.com prides itself on having an indie like mentality. This means they want to reach out to hipsters, trendsetters and early adopters of new music/internet radio. At least this is what the casual visitor will take away from it. In that respect, it comes off as being exclusive which is definitely not a positive aspect. They also have a “Tastemakers” section which doesn’t amount to much. The user may become confused as to why they should return to Haystack despite the typical social networking setup. Haystack may be a little thin on content and features at the end of the day.

Slacker.com fits better with the Pandoras of the world as it lacks the social feature. But you don’t have much say in the channels so it’s a more passive experience like Yahoo Music radio. For that matter just choose your local KEXP, KCRW or WDST for streaming.

Deezer.com, the French company, used to be called Blogmusik. They ran into music licensing trouble, got reprimanded and now operate legally under the Deezer moniker. More or less they relaunched their internet radio initiatives with good intent. I notice that the buffering delays test the user’s patience. The other sites do not have this issue. Once again, users can share music lists and the like. There’s no sign-up necessary to browse through stations/songs and get a basic overview of the free content.

Enjoy Internet Radio While you Can

Posted in Radio on 25.02.10

If you’re as big a fan of Internet radio as I am, you might want to start being concerned about the fact that thousands of U.S. webcasters plan to turn off the music and go silent to an impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country’s Internet radio industry. Enjoy the internet radio while you still can, I usually listen radio through this website: www.radio-time.com It organize 5000+ channel by genre and city, country, almost include all the avaible online radio resource on the net so far. One can socialize through search a tag or write comment and share favourite list with orther users. It’s radio, so a negative aspect is that it is impossible for users to fast forward, rewind, or repeat songs. Well a user may not be able to choose a specific song to listen to, but your winamp player may do that job better. Despite this negative aspect, I have found radio-time to be a great resource for accessing both familiar favorites and finding new music.

Internet Radio at Radio’s Best

Posted in Radio on 25.02.10

I love internet radio. Many of them commercial-free music in genres you’d never hear on broadcast radio is the main reason I love it. As soon as there is a portable device that will let me listen to internet radio wherever I go, I will gladly leave my iPod at home. My favorite web radio stations are the offerings by radio-time.com, especially stations in category, and DJ’s playlist is incredibly varied, playing songs from Johnny Cash between Nas, Interpol and Amy Winehouse. I have discovered more new music that I subsequently listened to than any other source. Some online station’s staff is awesome and it never sounds like public radio (take that as you will). This radio-time.com got my A+++ recommending, so check it out when you have a chance.

Internet Talk Radio: a Great Communication and Advertising Platform

Posted in Radio on 17.02.10

The dynamically changing world around us brings that instant urge within ourselves not only to remain updated with all the recent happenings but also to voice our opinions in such a way that it reaches the majority of audience. Ranging from serious political and socio-economic issues to sports and entertainment, we have our opinions on almost everything. Among various available media formats, an Internet talk radio is by far the one that gives the best platform to share our views.

An Internet talk radio is a broadcasting service that features discussions on various topical issues. While talk radios has always been popular among the audience, an Internet talk radio is fast gaining popularity due to its media of transmission i.e. the Internet. The talk shows ideally have a panel of experts with whom the audience can express and share their views. Both live and on-demand programs are broadcasted over an Internet talk radio. From the audience perspective, the best feature of an Internet talk radio is its portability and ease of usage. Irrespective of one’s location, an Internet talk radio can be accessed anywhere-anytime with a click of a mouse. Furthermore, one can even host a talk show over an Internet talk radio. Many Internet radio stations provide the necessary technology to host an Internet radio talk show.

An Internet talk radio also serves as a great advertising tool. While commercials on the television and the radio have always been popular, they have their share of drawbacks. Audience glued to a specific program on the television or the radio is likely to get distracted once the advertisements are aired during the interval. Such advertisement model falls short of serving its purpose. An Internet talk radio on the other hand transmits advertisements during the show itself. Advertisements are also displayed in the form of banners and links. A user who is interested about a particular product can straightaway click on it and visit the respective website for more details.

Internet talk radios provide an unmatched platform that gives audience the opportunity to share thoughts, voice opinions and interact with domain experts as well. For the advertisers, it is a great advertising platform. With all such benefits in place, an Internet talk radio is all set to become an essential part of our lifestyle.
