Educational Musical Games That Children Will Love

Posted in Music on 05.06.10

Have you ever thought of adapting traditional games that children already love to music?

The benefits of learning through playing games are enormous. Games help to inspire, motivate and learn much quicker and with much more fun.

In order to become sucessful at music, most people think that you need to sit at the piano every time you practice for a half an hour each day. This is a myth and is simply not true.

If you want your children to be great at music and therefore able to receive the full benefits of music at a young age, then it is important to mix up music practice at home and make it just as fun as any other fun activity you do at home.

Here are three examples of traditional well known games and instructions, you could play in your next home practice session with your children to help make practice more inspiring, varied and fun!

Musical Go Fish

Materials To make: 1) You will need to make 8 cards of the same size with different musical symbols or notation on each.

Using your printer, make two copies of the cards sheets you have just prepared. This will make 16 cards altogether to use in the game.

Objective: The rules are based on the classic version of “Go Fish”.

Make a pair by matching cards which are the same. Pairs are placed in front of each player until there are none remaining in their hand. The first player to match all of their own cards and place them in front of them is the winner!

Preparation: Deal five cards to each player (can use more or less if desired to make game shorter or longer). Extra cards go in the middle face down on a pile.

Directions: Player 1 asks player 2 of their choice if they have one of their cards. Player 2 either passes over the card or if they don’t have it says “GO FISH!”. If the result is “GO Fish!” then player 1 picks up a card from middle pile. Every player has a turn until someone matches all cards in their hand and “Goes Out”.

Musical Snakes and Ladders

Object: To get to the top before anyone else.

Preparation: 1)Make musical dice for the level you require.

2) Find a traditional snakes and ladders game board, or make up your own based on the traditional version. Place the game board in the middle of the playing area.

Each player needs a counter or button.

Directions: All counters are to be placed at the start. Each player in turn rolls dice, add the number of beats together and moves accordingly.

You can play the game with more than one dice if you would prefer the game to move faster.

There will be ladders to climb and snakes to fall down in the process of playing the game. This is a fun game of luck and skill!

Musical Snap

Preparation: 1)You will need to make a deck of 48 cards. Make 12 cards using musical pitches and / or notation and photocopy the four times.

Object: Two matching cards in a row wins the snap. The player with the most cards wins!

How To Play: Divide the playing cards up equally between players have two cards face up to start off two piles in the middle. Each player takes in turn to place their card on top of one of the two piles in the middle, until the two piles match. When a match is spotted, the first player to put their hand over the entire pile and call out snap, wins the card deck. The player with the most cards in the end wins!

Finding Musical Instruments Shopping Places

Posted in Music on 08.03.10

Many grade school and middle school’s offer music programs in their curriculum. In finding musical instruments shopping places, parents will automatically assume that any music store in town will have a variety of musical instruments that they can rent for the school year.

These methods of finding musical instruments have proven challenging to some parents because music stores offer musical instruments for students through rental plans that require monthly payments, that end up with the parent not owning the equipment they are paying for. In finding musical instruments shopping places, they prefer to look for stores that will let them buy the instrument outright.

The music stores are very helpful to parents in finding musical instruments shopping places that will allow them to purchase new and used musical instruments but the prices for some of these musical instruments is quite high and parents do not think they can afford them. The cleaning services offered by some of these musical instruments retail on an hourly basis, and the unknown costs lead parents away from buying a musical instrument for their child to use at school.

In finding musical instrument places, parents are afforded the opportunity to gain a slight cultural taste of complete collections of musical instruments that are from around the world. They get a history lesson on the development of the musical instruments and find out about famous musician that got to develop their talents on small instruments that are like the ones they are considering buying.

There are newsletters at many music stores that offer great places to go and help parents in finding musical instruments shopping places that they can afford. Some of these outlets sell musical instruments that are well below the asking price of the instruments they have found in music stores. These outlets might only offer the musical instrument, with no case or accessories to go with it.

In their efforts to locate musical instruments, parents use the Internet in finding musical instruments shopping places that have virtual storefronts, but offer exquisite prices and guarantees on the quality of musical instruments in their inventories. Some of these online retailers even offer catalogues that parents can order to see all of the instruments in their shops.

In finding musical instruments shopping places, parents can find those that focus on selling the exact instrument that they are interested in, and not be bothered by pictures and descriptions of instruments that their children will never try to play. This exclusivity provides the parents with the opportunity to focus on pricing and differences in the musical instruments offered for their child to use at school.

Some prices might differ only a few dollars, and the parents can identify these differences very quickly when the website features only one instrument. They can also take a quick glance at all of the cases, cleaners, and sheet music that is available with each musical instruments. The low inventories make finding musical instruments shopping places that sell only one type of instrument much more convenient for a bargain shopping parent of a promising band student.

Entertainment: Musical Entertainment in All Settings and All Cultures

Posted in Music on 07.03.10

There are very few people who can honestly say they don’t like to listen to music. No matter what type of music you like, the availability of the internet means you can buy or listen to the music that fits your style. There are so many web sites that have music links or musical downloads that you can listen to.

Those people who like cultural selections from Brazil, for example can type in the word Brazil dance or Brazil music in the YouTube search field and watch many pieces that fit that category. You can choose Indian music if you prefer or music from almost any culture in the world, you can find examples on the internet. It’s interesting to see how dance and music sequences are treated in various cultures.

Some pieces of music you listen to are hard to enjoy without wanting to dance. Some of the joyous Irish pieces for example would be hard to listen to and remain in a melancholy mood. Still one wonders how there can be so much energy during the music and dance known as Celtic or Irish.

Straight instrumental music is popular in many cultures. You can listen to everything from symphonies to classical guitar music. On the lighter side, there are music pieces that feature one man bands or novelty instruments such as the kazoo. At the other end of the spectrum is the big bands and rock and roll groups.

Music is used not only for entertainment, but has been shown to have physical and psychological impact on a person as well. Music in a minor key, for example will often sound sad or mournful, while some chords are almost a signature sound for various rock groups. Because different musical scales are used by different cultures, you can often feel a different atmosphere or personality reflected when you listen to music from China as compared to music from Ireland.

Whatever your country of origin or whatever type of music you prefer to listen to, you can now find examples in recordings. Everything from drum solos to full symphonic orchestra now can be found and purchased. What’s more there are many ways in which you can listen. Radio and music videos are obvious choices, but you can also listen to your favorite pieces with an MP3 player. Many mobile phones today allow you to download and play your favorite music pieces.

Probably the most complete experience in music enjoyment no matter what your favorite music type is, is to attend a concert. You can sit back in a comfortable seat in a concert hall and enjoy the full sound of a top symphonic orchestra where the sounds of the various instruments are carefully tuned and balanced so that you can pick up the emotion of the music.

Alternatively, you can attend a soul thumping rock concert where you feel the bass reverberating in your back teeth. The lights and energy of the audience adds to the total experience so that more than one sense is involved than hearing.

Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas the Musical Tickets- a Christmas Classic Coming to Boston

Posted in Boston on 06.03.10

You don’t have to wait until December to see the lean, green, Christmas hating machine. You can get Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical starting a month early in Boston! This classic children’s story has been adapted to stage and features a longer version of the original Dr. Seuss story about the creature with a heart two sizes too small.

If you forgot the gist of the show, it revolves around a large, mean green creature, The Grinch. Although The Grinch hates a lot of things, he hates Christmas the most, especially the singing of the local townspeople, the Whos. From his home high atop a mountain, the sweet voices of the Whos seem like nails on a chalkboard to the grumpy Grinch. He finally has a plan and employs the help of his faithful dog, who is also the narrator of the show. He dresses as Santa Clause and proceeds to loot Whoville on Christmas eve to prevent the Whos from celebrating. See how Christmas spirit finally finds The Grinch with your own Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical.

Timothy Mason wrote the book and scripts for the show. His other credits include Human Club, Levitation, Only You and The Fiery Furnace. The music for the show is by Mel Marvin. His musical endeavors include A History of the American Film, What’s Wrong With This Picture and The Gershwin’s’ Fascinating Rhythm. Some music and lyrics were by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss.

One of the best aspects of this show is the costuming. Whether it is an illustration or on stage, Dr. Seuss creations are meant to be outside of the ordinary. The makeup and costumes for Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas are both extravagant and entertaining. This show is meant to capture the attention of young audiences and the outlandish outfits accomplish this beautifully.

Another gem in this musical is, of course, the music. Audiences will love the new and old music with numbers like “Who Likes Christmas,” “It’s The Thought That Counts” and “This Time of Year” and the classic tunes “Welcome Christmas” and “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” The show will be perfectly staged at the Wang Theatre in Boston and a treat for the whole family. So if you are from the Boston area or visiting Boston for the holidays, make sure to get your Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas tickets.

7 Ways to Raise a Musical Baby

Posted in Music on 05.03.10

One of the most wonderful forms of self-expression parents can foster within their children is the ability to play music. Happily, it is possible to get started doing so while baby is still in the womb. Raising a musical child has many advantages — more so than can be accurately calculated. But just for starters, children who retain music into adulthood say it helps them to be happier, more thoughtful and compassionate individuals, and the world certainly needs more of those, I’m sure you will agree.

You can start your baby off right by doing four simple things before birth.

? Sing or hum to yourself and your unborn child. It doesn’t matter whether you do so loudly or quietly just as long as you do it often.

? Listen to a wide variety of recorded music. Play the radio or a CD when you are in the car and fill your home with sound. Go ahead and play the music you love best but spend some time reaching for other types of music that you don’t normally listen to.

? As Professor Harold Hill said in The Music Man, “Think music.” Listen for music when you are walking and listening to other people talking. You’ll soon realize that there is rhythm in the way we walk, cut a loaf of bread or knock on a door and in the sing-song quality of speech.

? If you don’t already know how to do so, learn to play an instrument. If you’ve been playing for years, make it a point to play every day. Playing music is a powerful source of prenatal communication. What better way is there to “talk” to your unborn child than with the music that you love?

Once your baby is born, you’ll want to continue the four basic steps already outlined and add a few more.

? When you play music, place your baby or toddler close to the instrument. Depending on what you play you might place the child under the instrument or on it so he or she can feel the vibrations as you play.

? Dance to the music with your baby or toddler in your arms. Let the child feel the music in his body and associate listening to music with the freedom of movement.

? As soon as you are willing, enroll your toddler into a music and movement program such as Kindermusik or something similar.

You’ll want to avoid a formal music instruction at all costs. It is a little-known truth that our traditional approach does more to stifle natural music abilities than to foster them. After decades in the music business I can safely say that forcing children to read music before they know how to play an instrument is insanity. It’s like expecting children to read before they can talk.

Your child may be ready for music lessons when he has reached the age of five or six. At that point, you should be looking for a music instructor who allows your child to play a great deal, long before he learns to read. To find the best instructor, interview several. Select someone you connect with on a personal level. Be certain that this individual plays all sorts of music without needing sheet music and that they are willing to teach a variety of musical styles from the very beginning. A helpful question to ask during your interview is: How large a repertoire will my child be playing in ten lessons?”

Best of luck to you and your lucky baby!

Shopping For Cheap Musical Instruments

Posted in Music on 03.03.10

Shopping for musical instruments could be a costly affair if quality and performance are the main criteria’s. The best quality electric guitar costs above $2000 and good keyboards are priced anywhere between $1000 and $3000. A quality acoustic drum set costs above $ 500. Professional musicians always go for high quality musical instruments irrespective of prices. Their main focus is on the quality and performance of the musical instruments as that will help them to draw huge crowd for their shows. Rich and famous people also spend thousands of dollars on buying these costly musical instruments, even though they rarely use them. These people believe that beautifying their homes with expensive pianos and other costly musical instruments impress the guests and visitors and eventually help upgrading their social status.

On the other side of the spectrum there are other sections of music lovers and performers with lots of passion, interest and talents on music. But, many of them can not afford to buy costly musical instruments. Students, teachers, amateur musicians, and other similar categories of musicians would always prefer shopping for cheap musical instruments. Students may not invest on costly musical instruments during their learning stages for two reasons. One is affordability and the second is risk of damaging the costly instruments while learning.

There are many ways for shopping cheap musical instruments. Countries like China and Taiwan manufacture musical instruments in volumes for selling at European and American markets with an affordable price. Brands like Jinyin and Eastman are made of rich variety of tone woods with good workmanship. It is estimated that some of the Chinese companies produce thousands of Violins, Piccolos, Clarinets, Saxophones and similar quantities of Trumpets, French Horns and Trombones every year. As these musical instruments are produced in mass volumes, they are able to sell them at a reasonable price. The prices of these musical instruments are affordable and quality as well as performance is reasonable. Such instruments are very popular among the students and other similar musicians across the countries.

Another way of shopping for cheaper musical instruments is buying the used ones from big musical troupes and other users. They often phase out their old musical instruments and buy a new one to maintain the quality of their performance. These are the good sources for students and other beginners because some times they may get good musical instruments for cheaper rates. One can also shop cheaper musical instruments from big musical stores and manufacturers during their discount and clearance seasons.

While, shopping for cheaper musical instruments can save substantial dollars than they would completely defeat the very purpose of music itself, if proper care is not taken while buying the cheaper musical instruments. The main problem with these cheaper musical instruments is that they are mostly sold on gray market or cheap musical shops. Often they do not carry warranty. As a result if something goes wrong, you can not repair it. These cheaper musical instruments may produce inferior sounds and effects. When a young student uses these instruments for learning purposes he may be frustrated due to its erratic performance.
