Posted in Boston on 20.03.10

DATELINE: MIDDLEBOROUGH, MA…

For a few days in August, Endicott Street in Boston’s North End will be transformed into “Cirelli Way” a fitting tribute to the late John Cirelli who first purchased Italian food products from suppliers in the North End in 1946 and sold them door-to-door from the trunk of his car, the first “Cirelli warehouse.”

Visitors to St. Anthony’s Feast, christened by National Geographic as the “Feast of all Feasts,” are invited to stroll down the Haymarket side of Endicott Street in Boston’s historic North End Friday August 29 –31 and experience a day in Italy at the all new Cirelli Marketplace while shopping, eating, and meeting new friends.

Cirelli Marketplace is a St. Anthony’s Feast original that is being offered for the first time in the 89-year history of the feast. Cirelli Marketplace will play a major role at the feast with numerous Cirelli Marketplace vendors joining in the festivities, offering quality brand name products and tantalizing foods that are a staple of fine restaurants throughout New England. Specialty food items and gift baskets featuring an assortment of Italian foods will also be offered.

Attracting millions of visitor over the years, St. Anthony’s Feast has been celebrated in Boston’s North End since 1919 as a tribute to both St. Anthony and the Italian culture, bringing the traditions of the small town of Montefalcione, Italy to Massachusetts. Colorful parades, live entertainment, and feasting on traditional Italian cuisine are hallmarks of the festival honoring Montefacione’s patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua.

The original Cirelli Marketplace, located in Middleborough, MA, is the retail division of Cirelli Foods, offering restaurant quality foods at warehouse prices. Cirelli Foods rose from it’s humble beginnings as a one man operation founded by John Cirelli in Brockton, MA, to its present position as an $80 million business that is New England’s largest family owned broad line foodservice distributor with over 4,000 customers in the Northeast.

Classic Car Cruise Night is a fun family night featuring hundreds of cars, music, and Cirelli’s famous hamburgers and hot dogs, which are offered for a nominal fee, with all proceeds going to Children’s Hospital.

On Fridays from 4 to 7 pm, Cirelli Marketplace also hosts a local Farmer’s Market outside, showcasing the wares of local farmers and crafters.

DirectBuy of North Boston awards $50,000 home makeover to area resident

Posted in Boston on 02.03.10

STONEHAM, MA…

DirectBuy of North Boston, the home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, recently awarded $50,000 to Leominster resident James Hartung as part of the company’s national Home Makeover Program. Mr. Hartung was presented with the check on August 26 at the Stoneham area club.

“When I received the letter in the mail notifying me that I was DirectBuy’s $50,000 Home Makeover winner, I didn’t think it was real,” said Hartung. “It wasn’t until I received a call from the DirectBuy corporate headquarters that made me realize I had truly won.”

With his newfound fortune, Hartung has many home improvement projects in mind, but there’s one clear front-runner that he’s looking to begin this fall.

“I’ve always wanted a farmer’s porch that wraps around both sides of my home and thanks to DirectBuy’s Home Makeover contest, I can finally have an outdoor gathering place for friends and family to enjoy,” said Hartung.

Not only will the porch provide a fun outside retreat for friends and family members, but it will also help facilitate next year’s kitchen remodel. Hartung currently has a door in his kitchen that opens to the outside. The door divides up his kitchen, taking up valuable countertop and cabinet space. With the addition of his wrap-around porch, James will be able to move the door to a better location, allowing for more cabinetry and counter space along one of the kitchen walls.

Carl Krawczyk who operates the Boston North location was excited that his club was able to help someone from their community. “Every day, my wife Barb and I have loved having the opportunity to come to work and help families save money. So to be able to give Mr. Hartung a check for $50,000, well, that’s just the icing on the cake!” said Krawczyk.

Old North Church – A Historical Landmark In Boston Commemorative Of A Time Long Past

Posted in Boston on 08.02.10

One of Boston’s most popular National Historic Landmarks, the ancient Old North Church is a must see for all those visiting the city. Built in 1723, this Episcopal Church is well known among people as Christ Church and is linked with the phrase “One if by land, two if by sea.” The fame of this historic church began when Robert Newman, the church’s sexton, on behalf of Paul Revere signaled with two lanterns from the church steeple to indicate that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord not by land, but by sea. The original steeple was destroyed in a storm, but today a replica of the original stands in its place.

Everyday, crowds of people stream in to view this beautiful church that has an extremely legendary and mysterious aura. One of the church’s highlights is the ring of its 8 bells, which is possibly the oldest church bells to be found in the country. One of the church bells still reads the inscription “We are the first ring of bells cast for the British Empire in North America, A.R. 1744.” The inside of the church is breathtaking in its old world charm that includes ornate chandeliers and box style pews.

The church also consists of a beautiful and historical garden that visitors will definitely enjoy exploring and taking pictures of. Many rare flowers and plants grow in the lovely setting of the garden, whilst there are 3 major attractions that lie within it. A chapel knows as the Chapel of St Francis originally stood on the grounds, which has now been converted to the Old North Church Museum and a gift shop. A visit to the church will not be complete without picking up a souvenir from the wide range of attractive souvenirs that are available for all ages in the gift shop.

Within the garden also lies the Third Lantern Garden and the Washington Memorial Garden where visitors can relax after walking the Freedom Trail. Along the trail, you will see many unique plants and commemorative plaques of history and times long gone.

Tourists wishing to visit this incredible historic landmark and explore the rest of the city would need to stay at one of the hotels in Boston. Amid the many Boston hotels, the Langham Hotel Boston is a modern and charming base for relaxation with easy access to the city’s popular landmarks.
