Two Way Radios – a Few Things You Do Need to Know

Posted in Radio on 10.05.10

The last time you were in an electrical component store, such as Radio Shack, did you happen to notice the two way radios that they have on their shelves? They were small, compact, very attractive and surprisingly cheap. Then when you stopped by a larger warehouse style store, you may have noticed that the employees were also carrying two way radios that they used to communicate with each other at the work place. Are these the same two way radios that you saw back at little electrical component shop?

Not the Same

The fact is, that while they may look quite similar at first glance, they are quite different in a number of ways. To begin with, the cute, inexpensive clip on models back at the store are manufactured to much lighter specifications for occasional family style use. Accidentally drop one on the floor and there is a good chance that that will be the end of it.

Even More Differences

Also, cheap price means cheap batteries that are going to fizzle out quickly if they are put to every day use. Still more, is that the cheaper models don’t have multiple channel options, so they are extremely limmited in how thay can be used. Lastly, by federal law it is illegal for a commercial business to use off the shelf unlicensed two way radios in their business operations.

Its a Great System

Does this mean that things are stacked unfavorably, either against businesses or private citizens who wish to use two way radios? Not at all and in fact all thin s that differentiate the two types of radios are in place to protect both businesses and private citizens.

It Works for All Parties

When a business purchases and uses licensed two way radios they are assured that their communications will not be interrupted all day by two kids playing in a field with the set of two way radios that they got for Christmas. Also, by having unlicensed mass produced two way radios available for consumers the public is assured affordable prices.

How do radio stations know how many people are listening? Do our radios broadcast back to the station?

Posted in Radio on 18.04.10

I dont think our radios would have enough transmit power to reach a radio station but how else would they know how many listeners they have at one time. And to broaden things , how do television stations know whos watching? Does my cable send messages back to the cable company , then back to the television network? Does my television infringe on my privacy?

Sirius Satellite Radios – The Top 5 Reasons To Make The Switch

Posted in Radio on 05.04.10

Satellite radios are a boon to oneâ??s existence. Ground based or terrestrial radios are of course, still prominent in this day and age; but many people now are switching to service providers like Sirius satellite radios. Convenience is the main reason for why people are signing up for this kind of service. Most satellite radios eliminate the need to configure audio programming to the tunes that people actually like, since geography is no longer as limited as compared to the ground based radio transmitters. A person can literally cross different state lines and still listen to radio shows and entertainment updates that he or she has chosen. In many areas where ground based radio transmissions no longer get through, satellite transmissions can. Additionally, service providers such as these offer audio entertainment minus all the commercials and censorship – and with digital quality too. So if you are thinking of signing up for Sirius satellite radios (or trading in your old provider for this,) here are the top 5 reasons for you to make the switch.

5. You get the most number of choices when it comes to dance and Latin music. Sure, you can certainly get this kind of service from terrestrial radio stations and even other satellite radio providers. But with Sirius satellite radios, you get 6 streams (channels) of dance and Latin music – not to mention Mexicana, tropical and electronic music to get you up and moving on the dance floor.

4. A packaged deal of 15 streams of rock music is what you can get with Sirius, and that is one stream more than its nearest competitor. It does not matter if you are into: alternative rock, Britpop, glam rock, grunge, hard core punk, hard core rock, heavy metal, indie rock, New Wave, nu metal, progressive rock, punk rock, or soft rock. There is a genre that you can subscribe to that can make headbanging a blast while listening to the tunes â?? preferably while you are strapped in the car with your seatbelt.

3. If you are the type to listen to an eclectic lot of music, Sirius provides everything under the sun including Urban music which is not provided for by the other satellite radio providers. Everything from Classical music to jazz and pop music from the 1950â??s all the way to the present are all available at Sirius.

2. In regards to news stations and entertainment updates, Sirius provides the most number of streams among all satellite radio providers. There are a total of 13 streams that offer news from Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, FOX and MSNBC. If you are interested in multi-lingual news broadcasting, Sirius satellite radios can provide this service as well.

1. And the best reason to switch to Sirius is this: you can now listen to your satellite music via your car radio and via an Internet portal too. Sirius Internet Radio is another option given to its subscribers that has a total of 78 channels ready for its global audience. This makes catching up on your favorite shows a breeze especially if you are traveling outside the country.

Cb Radios Benefit All Drivers

Posted in Radio on 03.04.10

In this age of the internet and high technology, many people have forgotten about the good old CB Radio.  You know, those devices which truckers talk on all day long.  CB radios are not just for truckers anymore. They are an important and useful piece of equipment which should be part of any travel plans. A main reason to own one is they help to keep you safe while driving.

Free communication over the road is easy with a CB radio.  You can use the radio to find traffic conditions such as any obstructions up ahead.  Like the truckers do, you can use you CB to find out where the cops or speed traps are.   Another great thing is that if you are tired while driving the CB can help you stay awake.  Of course if you do become tired it is always best to pull over until you are well rested.  However, engaging in conversations with your fellow travelers is wonderful for staying alert while driving a long distance.

When buying a CB radio, some things to consider are;  Do you want it permanently attached to your vehicle or a portable one?  If you plan on keeping  your car or truck than the best thing to do is buy a quality one, such as a Cobra CB radio, which can be mounted in your vehicle.  The mounted types have to be hard wired into your automobile and they come with an antenna which is attached to the outside.

Portable CB radios are very popular too and they are for people who want to carry it with them whether in or out of a vehicle.  These handheld CB’s radios are very convenient for communicating and finding road info before you prepare for your trip.  Some people have a mounted radio in their truck or car and then keep a portable one with them when they are out of their vehicle.

I know that we have all been accustomed to paying monthly cell phone, internet and satellite radio fees but the CB radio service is still free.  Truckers and automobile drivers use them on a daily basis for finding useful information.  Decide on the brand and type of CB Radio you will need and either select one which can be mounted in your car or a portable one.  You will find that the CB radio is not just a thing of the past but an important safety and communication device for today.

Internet Radio Networks – the Essential Guide to Internet Radios and Beyond!

Posted in Radio on 01.04.10

Ever since the age of the Internet has dawned in our lives, we have discovered an electronic counterpart of many things from our everyday life. The Internet has changed the way we communicate with others, share information, buy and sell things, and also the way we entertain ourselves. This is the era of e-mails, e-commerce, e-shopping, and e-radios or Internet radio.

Internet radios are the latest rage in cyberspace. It is but a natural culmination in the continuing evolution of the Internet. Internet radio networks are what everybody is talking about these days. In fact, after e-mails and e-commerce, e-radios are poised to be the next big thing in cyberspace.

E-radio or Internet radio, however, is not a very new innovation. As every netizen will know, Internet radio networks have been around for quite some time now. It is only recently, with the proliferation of Internet technology and improved connectivity, that Internet radio has truly come of age. Today, the listener is pampered with a most exhaustive range of channels (or stations), catering to all kinds of interest. This is becoming a standard offering of Internet radio networks that serve music online. The listener can tune into any of dozens of stations covering such genres as Classic Rock, Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Jazz, 80s music, 70s music, Oldies, New Age, Reggae, Country, Latin, Euro, Ambient, Lounge, Progressive, Techno and what not. Hours and hours of uninterrupted music at no cost â?? thatâ??s the magnitude of the entertainment provided by Internet radio networks.

And now let me introduce you to the latest avatar of Internet radio â?? the Internet talk radio. Among the most popular Internet radio networks are the ones that feature Internet Talk Radio. Streaming talk shows and discussions on a wide range of subjects have made them popular among serious listeners or those who carve for something more than just music from their e-radios. Internet talk radio programs host various talk shows with specialists on different subject matters who anchor the show.

The possibilities of Internet radio networks extend even beyond the apparent. While traditional radio broadcasters have often used the Internet to advertise or promote their shows, Internet radio technology has actually revolutionized the concept and simple programming requirements have taken it to the extent where individuals, organizations or anyone for that matter, can easily host their own Internet talk radio station from the comfort of their home.

Now, letâ??s take a look at the technology that has made it all possible. Internet radio networks use many different methods for creating the audio stream source. Some of these include using the SHOUTcast service, which utilizes Winamp and the SHOUTcast DSP plugin to deliver MP3 audio at higher bitrates. Other methods include open source technologies such as Streamcast, stream-db, IceS, and MuSE, and patent-free data formats such as Ogg Vorbis. Using open source stream source tools allows for interesting web interface possibilities like phpStreamcast. Other applications include Broadwave which delivers audio in mp3 and relies on the listener’s default media player to open the stream.

There is no dearth of radio networks on the Internet today. Some of these are really exceptional in the range of services they offer. Internet radio networks like Voice America make it easier to host your own Internet talk radio show. Such Internet radio networks not only provide you with the technology to host your Internet radio show but also give you a complete package of Internet streaming media broadcasting, proven support services in web, marketing, and interactive solutions that help you to make your mark and your presence known to the ever increasing Internet audience.

If you are planning to host your own Internet talk radio, seriously consider working with internet radio networks like Voice America. The possibilities are truly endless.

Communicating between office and field executives is an important function of these radios.

Frequency: As far as frequency is concerned, you have to consider the kind of settings you work in. UHF-2 frequency works best, if you have a business setup such as a restaurant, hotel, hospital/health care or a school. Whereas businesses in open field-jobs are concerned, VHF radios should suffice.

Power: The usual standard power requirement ranges from 1-5 watts. Anything higher is generally not required.

Channel: Certain businesses such as the hotel industry and the transport industry will require multiple channels. And it all depends on the number of departments your business has and the degree of your client relationship and service.

Durability: If your business requires more of on-field presence, outside the calm safety of your office, you would naturally require a more rugged model, that can survive accidental drops with its shock-absorbent features.

Along with two way radios, you can get comfortable-to-wear headset with Push-to-Talk features, as also available with many models.
