Scott Brown Acceptance Speech Review

Posted in Massachussets on 28.06.10

Go Scott Go! Go Scott Go! These are the first things you would have heard if you were to have attended the Scott Brown Acceptance Speech or heard it on the news. Tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken. Tonight the Independent Majority has stood their ground and sustained an incredible victory. Scott Brown is now the Massachusetts United States Senator.

Scott Brown claims that while he is in office, he will do his absolute best to serve the constituents of Massachusetts and to make the citizens proud of him. He emphasized that while he was honored to have the citizens of Massachusetts elect him, that the seat didn’t just belong to him or one particular political party, that it belonged to all the people of the state. Paul Kirk had no hard feelings, and said he’d help Scott Brown and his team get situated in office over the coming weeks.

At the Scott Brown Acceptance Speech he mentioned that he was ready to move to Washington and take care of business without any more delays. The people present at the speech seemed to have really liked this and expressed a lot of confidence in Scott and his team.

Scott Brown beat out Democrat Martha Coakley which gave him the seat which was held by the late Ted Kennedy for over 46 years. He mentions in these trying times that its imperative that the state comes together as a commonwealth and congratulated Martha on running the senate race with him. This entire Senate Race occured because Ted Kennedy passed away after a lifetime of tireless work.

Scott Brown called Ted Kennedy’s wife Vikki and he told her that Ted’s name will always command the respect and affection of the people of Massachusetts and that everyone in the state feels the same way about her. In the Scott Brown Acceptance Speech he went on to say that he would do his best to fill the late Ted Kennedy’s shoes and honored his memory.

CD Clock Radio – A Personal Review.

Posted in Radio on 11.03.10

I simply love my CD clock radio. For me the way you wake up in the morning is important, so why not do it the right way? Why torment yourself with some earsplitting and obnoxious beeping alarm clock? Since the time I got my CD clock radio I’ve been waking up in the most luxurious ways possible.

At times if I’m feeling especially sophisticated I’ll set on some Bach or perhaps some Beethoven to wake up to on my CD clock radio. There’s really nothing like starting the day off with some timeless classical music softly wafting into your ears and easing you from your slumber into a state of wakefulness. There have been times when I have dreams of hearing this music before I arise, and the rest of the day I feel composed and rested instead of irritated and rushed.

Obviously, I presume the main reason people prefer loud buzzers to wake up to, is to ensure they really awaken, but personally I have found that even gentle music from my CD clock radio almost always does the trick. Or if I’m worried about getting up by a certain time, I can set the CD clock radios buzzer alarm as well as the music. First the music plays, but then five minutes later I set the buzzer to go off just to make sure. Despite the fact that I never had to hear that buzzer, it’s reassuring to know that its there.

Another nice feature about my CD clock radio is the alternative sounds it has to wake up to. Made by Timex, my CD clock radio has a selection of ‘nature sounds’ to play in place of a buzzer. Though it may not have a very extensive selection of sounds, but they are actually pretty nice. One of them is not really a nature sound, but is a series of gentle wind chime like tones that play in a very Zen like manner. Perhaps if I’m tired of waking up to classical – Bach, I can adopt a more Eastern style of starting the day and wake up feeling like a Buddhist monk instead! With regards to the sound quality on my CD clock radio is only fair, and is not really designed to replace or act as a CD player.

CD clock radios are just great alternatives to your standard clock radios, and enable you to slip in any kind of music you want to wake up to. And yes! You even have the option of waking up to the radio as their names imply, if you run out of CD ideas.

Review of the Sony Dream Machine Clock Radio

Posted in Radio on 07.03.10

I recently purchased a new clock radio, the Sony Dream Machine, to wake me up in the morning for work. The old clock radio we had was thrown out in disgust because it was so irritating, and the buttons were not working properly from repeated frustrated beatings when I was trying to set the time.

The Sony Dream Machine is pretty standard looking, not that expensive, and has large green numbers that can be seen OK in the day, and are not too bright in the night.

It’s best feature is a little paddle switch with which you can adjust the alarm time up and down. So if you want to get up 15 minutes earlier one day because the CEO is coming to visit your office, you can easily adjust it and then just adjust it up 15 minutes, back to what it was the next evening. You don’t have to cycle through 24 hours, in minutes, all 1440 of them, like most other cheap clock radios.

Setting the time is the same. You can change the hours and minutes forward and backward, and not just in one direction, which is marvellous!

You can be woken up with a choice of either radio (fm and am) or buzzer, and you can switch the alarm off.

Another nice feature is that you just touch a button on the top of the radio to switch the radio on, and another button to switch it off. No horrible slider switches. This same button is used to switch the alarm off when it wakes you up. There is also another very large rectangular button to put the alarm into snooze mode, which gives you 10 minutes more sleep time every time you push it. If you push it twice in quick succession it will let you snooze for 20 minutes before waking you up. There’s a lot of common sense in this radio!

The radio has a little lithium battery for retaining your settings during power failures. It should last about 5 years.

It also has a daylight saving button, which adds an hour to the time, to put the radio in summer time mode.

I’ve bought quite a number of clock radios in the past, and this is the first one I’ve actually liked. It really is a brilliant little machine, and whoever designed it has obviously put a lot of thought into it’s functions.

I’m very happy, and no one is paying me to say this!!

Radio City Music Hall – Concert Venue Review

Posted in Radio on 06.03.10

New York has a lot of things to be proud of. One of them is Radio City Music Hall.

Established in 1932, after the stock market crash, by John D. Rockefeller, Jr, Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and impresario S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel, Radio City Music Hall is a venue unlike any in the world. Located at the heart of New York, on 6th Avenue between 50th street and 51st street, Radio City Music Hall was built as a part of Rockefeller’s a great idea to design an area in New York where businesses, merchants and citizens could merge. Today, this is known as the Rockefeller Centre.

Radio City Music Hall is the largest of all indoor theatres around the globe. Designed by Donald Deskey, the venue’s marquee is a full city-block long. Entering the theatre, visitors cannot help being overwhelmed by its art deco look, sweeping arches on the walls and the ceiling and its choral staircases. The absence of columns facilitates actors and performers to bring live action very close to spectators, who enjoy a perfect view from any sitting in the three shallow mezzanines of the venue. The stage of Radio City Music Hall is the most appropriately equipped in the world as it is built on hydraulic-powered elevators, which facilitate the swift change of sets and creation of spectacular effects in the three sections of the Great Stage. A fourth elevator is used for lifting and lowering the orchestra according to the programmed staging effects.

The “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ, built exclusively for Radio City Music Hall, has thrilled the venue’s audiences for more than sixty-five years. Housing its 32 feet pipes in eleven separate rooms, the “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ spreads its magnificent sounds in the venue. The theatre contains more than 25,000 lights featuring four-color stage lighting, while the advanced mechanical equipment allows for fountains of water, torrents of rain, fog and clouds.

Some of the legends that have performed on the Great Stage of Radio City Music Hall are Frank Sinatra, Bill Cosby, John Denver, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Jose Carreras, Linda Ronstadt, BB King, and many others. After the renovation in 1999, which cost nearly $73,000,000, the venue hosted Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, The Eurythmics, Sting, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, 98 Degrees, Mary j. Blige, Echo & The Bunnymen, Celine Dion and many others, who have thrilled the audiences of the Hall.

The lifetime experience of Radio City Music Hall is the Christmas spectacular, which attracts more than one million visitors from all over the world. The legendary eight-week show is every year a sold-out since 1993 that it made its debut. Starring the world famous Radio City Rockettes, the Christmas spectacular in an unmatched show performed with high precision in choreography and huge professionalism.

By and large, Radio City Music Hall is a unique venue, with a long-established reputation. The Hall offers a lifetime experience to its audience and is a must, not only for the tourists, who visit New York, but for the local people as well. If you even have the chance to get there, do not miss it.

A Review of the Radiosophy HD100 HD Radio

Posted in Radio on 03.03.10

I’ve had the Radiosophy HD100 for a few weeks this summer and it’s definitely a great value at $99.95.

To the best of my knowledge, it’s the least expensive HD Radio available, yet has a number of very nice features.

The Pros

I liked the HD sound a lot. Both AM and FM sound noticeably better in HD – with clean, clear sound and no static or interference. However, and maybe this is just me, I saw the most dramatic difference between regular AM and HD AM Radio.

The unit is easy to use right out of the box with no installation issues. It’s basically plug-and-play; just plug it in and turn it on.

It’s also easy to find HD stations. Just press Seek and the radio automatically goes to the next station it can find and a red light comes on. If the station broadcasts in HD, a blue light will blink and then go solid when the HD signal locks in. The text display shows the stations call letters, and if it has an HD2 channel, ts frequency will be followed by the number one. For example, 101.1 will appear as 101.1-1. Press Seek again and the HD100 automatically goes to the HD2 channel.

The HD100 is also very easy to program. All you do when you find an HD or HD2 broadcast you want to save, is press one of the five Program buttons. You can program u up to five AM and five FM stations.

There is also a Scan Up and Scan Down button. I found the Scan Down button to be especially since Seek only goes up the dial.

The Radiosophy HD100 has a telescoping FM antenna which I don’t think I really needed. However, I did end up attaching the AM antenna as I had a problem with AM station signals despite the fact that I live within the metro area.

I also liked its compact size. The design is nice and it’s easy to pick up the unit and carry it from room to room. Since it doubles as a clock radio with a clock, an alarm and a snooze feature, I would most likely keep it in my bedroom.

The Cons

I would like to see this HD radio ship come with a remote. I had it sitting on a bookshelf across the room so that whenever I wanted to change channels or adjust the volume, I had to stop what I was doing, and get up and walk over to the unit.

I also found the display or text screen a bit hard to read. But then, I’m no spring chicken so maybe that had to do more with my eyesight than the radio’s display screen.

Finally, given the size of the unit, there is no real stereo separation. The sound is excellent but you will never think you’re listening to a stereo broadcast. However, to me, that’s OK because the HD100 is a compact, clock radio and not a bookshelf stereo system.

Summary

In summary, found the the Radiosophy HD100 to be a great value. It’s nearly $100 less than other tabletops and yet gives you just about everything you need in an HD radio. Its sound is clear and pure, it’s easy to set up and use and it will even wake you up.

I give it a solid B+.

Review Of Boston Ticket Wizard Aka Bostonticketwizard.com

Posted in Boston on 28.02.10

As an avid concert and sports lover from the Boston Area I spend thousands of dollars every year on tickets. Most of the time I would buy them from Ticketmaster when I can, but many times I decide at the last minute on taking the wife out for a concert, Celtics or Bruins game.

I just want to share with you what I think is a hidden gem in todays world of high priced events. It all started last year when U2 was playing at Gillette stadium.

I was searching on Craigslist for last minute tickets to one of the U2 shows and came across an ad for $15 tickets which kind of left me scratching my head. I wondered what I was getting for $15 and had been warned by friends that they had bought fake tickets on craigslist and to stay away from buying tickets there.

I sent an email out to the seller and immediately got what looked like a premade email stating to visit BostonTicketWizard.com. There was also a link to the tickets. After visting their website, I must say that they had over a hundred tickets for under $25 each. I ended up buying a couple for me and the wife for $15 each and then with the surcharge and delivery charge it came to just over $50.00. Not bad considering it was U2 and it was still like getting 2 for 1 at that price.

My wife was excited and so was I. We got a great deal but there was only one problem. There was no way in hell they could ship them in time for the concert so I sent an email back to them asking how they would deliver the tickets since it was to late to ship them.

I recieved a prompt reply from one of their employees  He explained that they would have their courrier hand deliver them to me at Gillette Stadium. They told me the phone number was on the reciept I would get in my email and to call the number when I got to the stadium. He said the courrier would be on site handing out tickets to those who bought them through the Boston Ticket Wizard website. He told me to keep the reciept that was emailed to me after purchase so I could show it to the courrier.

We arrived at Gillette Stadium and made the call and met the courrier at the main gate and he gave us our tickets. He said because they did not sell all of the tickets for the show he was giving us field tickets instead of the upper level seats we paid for. My wife and I just looked at each other in disbelief. These tickets were the best and we got them for peanuts!

What a freaking concert it was. U2 is still rocking after all these years. Needless to say, I buy just about all of my tickets from them and usually always get awesome seats for the money. They have delivered them to us at the Boston Garden a couple of times and at the Wang Center when we bought them the day of a show or game.

If you are looking for a great ticket company that delivers service and cheap tickets then I highly recommend using Boston Ticket Wizard.

I wouldn’t think of using another ticket company to buy tickets from just because of the fact that they hand delvered our $15 U2 tickets and then gave us a courtesy upgrade. These guys were losing money on these tickets and were smiling the whole time.

Now that’s service!!!!

Music Review of Fantasy Black Channel by Late Of The Pier

Posted in Music on 22.02.10

“Late Of The Pier” are a four-piece indie rock band from Castle Donington, London. Late Of The Pier are Samuel Eastgate (Vocals, Guitar and Synthesizers), Andrew Faley (Bass and Synthesizers), Sam Potter (Sampler) and Ross Dawson (Drums). All of them have pseudonyms and known as Samuel Dust, Francis Dudley Dance, Jack Paradise and Red Dog Consuela respectively. Late Of The Pier are very much into electronica and their music genres cover indie rock, electronica, synth pop and dance-punk.

Late Of The Pier’s Fantasy Black Channel opens with roaring guitar instrumental “Hot Tent Blues”. It seems that Late Of The Pier have been using a sampler to make this track. The guitar on this track revives the 80s rock scene where it’s filled with pitching and echoic guitar. The bass and drums provide cushion in the background as the guitar plays on. Once it reaches the remaining 13 seconds, the track gallops again but this time, with some start/stop guitar riffs. It’ll gradually bring you to the next track. Very energetic opening!

Once entering “Broken”, oh my god the guitar just brings you on. You couldn’t help it but to move your body to this crazy filler track. Very awesome guitar work i would say. Shortly after that, it’s followed by a series of music created by synthesizers and sampler. Only by the time Samuel enters with his vocals, Broken seems to slow down a bit to allow him to express himself. Broken is filled with various guitar playing, you can’t help but to love this track. Just my first listen, Broken already got me wanting for more. Very addictive!

“Space And The Woods” comes in right after Broken. If i’m not mistaken, it sounds like Late Of The Pier are playing keyboards here. Catchy keyboards playing by them. Samuel has a robotic voice-like as he sings on. When it comes to the part which i assume is the chorus, the guitar just comes in, without affecting the earlier keyboards that we first heard. In the bridge, Samuel sings in a very ignorant voice that goes, “I’m shit hot so say what you think about me, i’m not gonna cry because I don’t care…” It sounds kind of cool here. The music on Space And The Woods definitely matches the previous track. Love the keyboards!

“The Bears Are Coming” has a very cool opening. African-influenced percussion belting with the synthesizers. Once Samuel comes in, it just adds extra weight to the already really good music. After each paragraph of his singing, the music just plays on. And it’s not just some ordinary music, it’s the type of music which is going to at least make you nod your heard. The Bears Are Coming also vibrates some disco-feel to it. In the bridge, Late Of The Pier just takes a short break with the slow tempo and Samuel enters with his yell-like vocals layered with heavy-heart elements, “I saw you wading in the water, i saw you ride along the sea, shine on a nightmare, shine through the trees…” Once after that, the music again kills me on the spot. With some voice in the background, it’s like a party track in the making. Before ending, it seems that Late Of The Pier are not done with the track yet, they just play around with their synthesizers and sampler. Amazing feeling!

On “Random Firl”, the music in the beginning is just way too cute. The synthesizers-influenced guitar are very cheeky as well. If you pay attention, you would notice a slight sound of exclaimation (Like a woman’s gasp) in the background when the music are just warming up to get to the verse. It just sounds so funny to me. Slowly, Late Of The Pier seem to be adding more instruments to this track, making it sounds much better gradually. The cheeky and catchy guitar just work its way throughout the track, very sweet feeling.

“Heartbeat” begins with some 80s-like music before the real deal comes in where Late Of The Pier enter with loud guitar riffs. When it gets to the chorus, Heartbeat seems to get into another level, it gets rougher and groovier here with Samuel going, “A heartbeat, a flicker, a line…. It’s just a line…” in repetition. The best moment on Heartbeat definitely. Entering the second verse, the bass also gets groovier and louder. It just never fails to pump up my blood and the volume. It’s not a line, it’s the music!

“White Snake” has a somewhat slow beginning. But it suddenly bursts with the loud guitar of Late Of The Pier. Samuel also seems to be gasping for air when singing as it’s fast and loud here. The guitar also plays at a speedy rate. When it gets to the chorus, the whole track just loosen up slightly. Piano can be heard playing in a repetition of notes rapidly as the track goes on from here. In the bridge, Late Of The Pier add some creepy music to White Snake, it comes in as a surprise, really. But it’s still good as the track is so fast until it gets you rocking as well. Even Samuel sings and yells like a true rock star!

“VW” continues with some clever music playing. Horn can be heard here as the music goes fast and slow throughout the track. When it’s fast, the horn seems to be louder and the music sounds kind of eerie, as if something bad is bound to happen. When it gets to the slower part, Later Of The Pier seem to be getting ready for the next speedy break. Listening to VW makes you think that you’re running out of time and something bad is about to happen. Dangerously fast!

“Focker” has a very strong electronic influences to it. On the verse, Samuel sings very fast as if he’s gulping down the lyrics. However in the chorus, things get a different approach. Samuel just sings and drags on, “I wanna be you friend… Oh yeah…” With the heavy electronic music in the background, sometimes it just drowns out the voice of Samuel. Focker can be said one of the wildest tracks on Fantasy Black Channel. Even the remaining 30 seconds are filled loud guitar and synthesizers, looping and echoing to the end.

“The Enemy Are the Future” has a cute beginning. You would know what i mean after listening to it. It seems that this time Samuel share his vocals part with other members of Late Of The Pier. It has a deep and playful voice once it comes in. As the chorus comes, the whole track as i never expect, sounds very good with the bass going on. With Samuel going catchily in repetition, “Easy life, is it an easy life?…”, i feel obliged to sing along as well. I just don’t know why, the way Late Of The Pier play and sing is really good! Needless to say, the music is just great on The Enemy Are The Future. Deeper into the track, it just turns into another track totally. The sampler and synthesizers just hit the invisible magic button as it’s no longer a rock track, it’s a dance track. Very, very highly evolved.

“Mad Dogs and Englishmen” starts with a bell chiming from afar. Sooner than later, the bass comes in and eventually it gets louder with a certain rhythm to it. The guitar and the bass on this track seems to be working together here, layering and covering one another. When the bass goes, the guitar waits; when the guitar goes, the bass waits. The bass especially, makes me smile as it possesses some funny elements in it. In the bridge and until the end, Late Of The Pier just play their stuffs which resulting in some playful and great music. It makes you want to play…

“Bathroom Gurgle” opens with steady drum beats (That resembles “Chelsea Dagger” by The Fratellis) and soon joined by synthesizers. The music itself is already catchy enough to make me want to get up and dance. It’s infectiously groovy! In the chorus, Samuel yells, “Find yourself a new boy…” with the music adding in some xylophone-like sound. I really enjoyed myself listening to that particular moment. Other than that, Late Of The Pier’s Samuel also plays around with his vocals on Bathroom Gurgle as he imitates the voice of females at some points of the track. Few seconds after the chorus, Bathroom Gurgle surprises us with a cheering part that goes, “So put your hands on your waistline, and move you body to the bassline, and get your hands on some cheap wine…” Late Of The Pier really show everything they have on this track. One track that covers a variety of singing and playful music.

Cheers!
