Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation and South Shore Skin Center Educate Families

Posted in Massachussets on 23.08.10

COHASSET, HINGHAM, PLYMOUTH AND WEYMOUTH, MA…

The Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation of Hingham and South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices serving thousands of patients at their Cohasset and Plymouth offices, teamed up at the Special Olympics held last week at Weymouth High School to educate children and their families about skin cancer prevention and sun safety .

Armed with one gallon of Blue Lizard sunscreen, Don’t Fry Day handouts and knowledge to share, Mimi Svenning, Assistant Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation and  Lori Skinner, RN of South Shore Skin Center who is a board member of Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation, educated attendees on proper sunscreen application and ways to protect themselves in the sun.

This sun safety and skin cancer prevention event at the Special Olympics was part of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation’s Don’t Fry Day line-up of events.  Don’t Fry Day (celebrated across the U.S. on May 28th ) is an initiative sponsored by the National Council of Skin Cancer Prevention (NCSCP) meant to raise awareness of sun safety.

According to Skinner, “I was so pleased to be able to educate parents about proper sunscreen use. There are a lot of misconceptions about sunscreen efficacy. I was able to teach many parents about sunscreen key ingredients and that it needs to be reapplied every two hours despite the SPF.”

One of the teachers at the Special Olympics commented that it was fortunate that  Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation tent was on hand, as many children and adults needed to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

“Our mission is to teach children and their caretakers about prevention and early detection of skin cancer.  We must remember that skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and that one person dies every hour from this preventable and easily recognizable disease,” explained Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation.

Dr. Richard Eisen, M.D., dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation Medical Director said, “This was the second annual Don’t Fry Day and we made it our business to get out into the community to teach the public about skin cancer prevention.”

Don’t Fry Day handouts with sun safety tips are available at South Shore Skin Center’s offices and also online at www.melanomaprevention.orgCoolibar was the sponsor of this event and provided the complimentary sunscreen.

“Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer” compiled

Posted in Massachussets on 31.07.10

DATELINE:  COHASSET AND PLYMOUTH, MASS

Given the recent recognition of unusually high skin cancer rates on the South Shore, SSSC, with locations in Cohasset and Plymouth, are compiling a list of â??Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summerâ?.

The public is encouraged to add to the list which will be published on South Shore Skin Centerâ??s website â?? http://www.southshoreskincenter.com. Public suggestions may be emailed to sdubin@prworkzone.com. The deadline is June 27th â?? just after the conclusion of the public school year.

Some initial Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, Sam Diegoâ??s tented patio in Plymouth, The Company Theater in Norwell, South Shore Natural Center in Norwell and F1 Boston in Braintree.

Last summer it was reported that some of the wealthiest communities on the South Shore have the highest melanoma skin cancer rates, in some cases more than double the number expected, according to newly released state data.

The latest Cancer Incidence in Massachusetts Report, released by the Department of Public Health, shows that between 2001 and 2005 melanoma occurred well beyond projections in Cohasset, Duxbury, Norwell, Hingham and Milton.

â??We are encouraging families to be very careful about sun exposure and focusing on less sunny, yet fun summer events can help minimize that exposure,â? noted Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset.

Dr. Ramzi Saad, also a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, added, â??Summer means free time to explore and try new things.  The Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer program is intended to give families fun and safe ideas.â?

Posted in Massachussets on 01.07.10

For the past few weeks, patrons to Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar in at 176 South Franklin Street (Route 37) in Holbrook could only dream of playing a round of miniature golf before or after enjoying one of the worldâ??s 10 best ice creams, as ranked by the National Geographicâ??s â??10 Best of Everything: The Ultimate Best of Everything.â? On May 3, the wait ended as Crescent Ridge Dairy opened the Mini Putt-Putt Golf for the spring, summer and fall seasons.

The Crescent Ridge Dairyâ??s Mini Putt-Putt will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Mini Putt-Putt will be open seven days a week starting June 1.

â??The Mini Putt-Putt was a big hit with our customers and played a big part in Crescent Ridge Dairy establishing a presence at our new location in Holbrook,â? said Mark Parrish, president and third generation of the Parrish family to run Crescent Ridge Dairy. â??Last year, we didnâ??t get the Dairy Bar up and running until August, so weâ??re completely excited to have both Dairy Bar and Mini Putt-Putt fully operational for the entire season.â?

In addition to the nine-hole miniature golf course, the â??Dairy Barâ? serves Crescent Ridge Dairyâ??s 31 flavors of ice cream and five flavors of frozen yogurt as a way to cool down after a round on the links. â??We would like to make the Mini Putt-Putt available to non-profits and other charitable organizations looking for a different kind of fundraising event,â? said Parrish. â??What better way to raise funds for your cause by having a mini-golf tournament and topping it off with our world renowned ice cream?â?

Non-profits interested in holding a fundraiser can contact Marcos Lins or Deb MacKinnon directly at the Hobrook Dairy Bar at 781-963-1016.

Besides its Holbrook location, Crescent Ridge Dairy has another â??Dairy Barâ? at its headquarters in Sharon, Massachusetts. Real Estate is Prime in Boston’s South End

Posted in Boston on 01.04.10

Boston’s South End has had a varied, twisting existence. Once a forgotten aspect to the city’s bustling downtown area, the South End has overcome its previous reputation as a down in the mouth area to become one of the city’s most vital locations. Bursting with nightlife, restaurants, parks and a varied culture, Boston’s South End is a wonderful place to invest in Real Estate.

Ethnic melting pot. Yuppie neighborhood. Jazz mecca. Gay neighborhood. Bohemian artists’ enclave. Trendy shopping and dining district. At one time or another, all of these labels have been attached to Boston’s South End, a neighborhood located just south of the glitzy Back Bay and north of the working-class neighborhood of Roxbury. And they’ve all been true—in fact, it could be argued that few Boston neighborhoods have undergone more changes than the South End. Today, however, the neighborhood that’s emerged is one of beautiful brick rowhouses and quiet tree-lined streets, anchored by some of the best thoroughfares in Boston—Tremont, Columbus, Harrison, Washington — for art, culture, shopping and dining. “The South End has absolutely become one of the energetic focal points of the city,” says Darryl Settles, who owned and operated the now-defunct restaurant/jazz club Bob’s Southern Bistro in the South End for 17 years, and has seen the neighborhood develop into a jewel in Boston’s cultural crown. “Every year, we’re seeing more and more options for dining and nightlife…we’ve grown tremendously.”

If you’re in search of a prime spot for lounging with a cocktail while you listen to music, scoping out the singletons or just chilling with friends, the South End offers plenty of options. Flash’s Cocktails (310 Stuart St., 617-574-8888) serves up both classic libations and cutting-edge creations. The ultra-smooth 28 Degrees (1 Appleton St., 617-728-0728) is a sleek and seductive hangout offering tasty cocktails and a diverse beer selection. Clery’s (113 Dartmouth St., 617-262-9874) has a neighborhood pub feel that draws in big crowds on the weekends for food, drink and revelry. And Wally’s Cafe (427 Massachusetts Ave., 617-424-1408) is one of the city’s most venerable nightspots, opened back in 1947, and the last survivor of the South End’s once-impressive array of jazz clubs. Wally’s proudly continues to feature live music 365 days a year, all without charging a cover.

With a thriving gay community calling the South End home, it’s no surprise that the neighborhood boasts a few of the city’s most popular gay bars, including Club Café (209 Columbus Ave., 617-536-0966), a usually packed nightclub with a video bar, regular evenings devoted to ’80s music, karaoke and dance nights, and a tasty restaurant (209 Boston) serving up grub, and Fritz Lounge (26 Chandler St., 617-482-4428), which bills itself as “Boston’s Gay Sports Bar,” and boasts six flat screen plasma TVs, dartboards and a convivial and relaxing after-work atmosphere.

The biggest new addition to the South End nightlife scene is The Beehive (541 Tremont St., 617-423-0069), a 300-seat bar/restaurant/live music venue which opened last May. According to co-owner Settles, the Beehive (named for an early 20th century artists’ colony in Paris) is a place where “mature audiences can come and enjoy themselves. Whatever they want to do—whether it’s eat dinner, come and see live music, just hang out and have a drink—they can stay out late doing it.”

Michael Russell writes about a variety of subjects. This article discusses the South End of Boston. For more information about South End of Boston Real Estate, visit the Real Estate Book.

Red Carpet Program Ushers Hub Plumbing & Mechanical to Relocate to New, Larger Location in South Boston

Posted in Boston on 21.03.10

The new location is includes approximately 3,000 square feet of executive office and warehouse space. Hub Plumbing currently employs seven 2-man crews and four administrative people, with plans to double this staff in 2008 to expand both gross and volume.

Can you imagine expecting concierge level ‘Red Carpet’ service from your plumber? As a young Master Plumber John Wood quickly became disenchanted with the quality of customer service provided to clients and was tired of being the butt of bad jokes about stereotypical plumbers.

As a result, John Wood became a man on a mission, when, seven years ago at the age of 23, he set off on his quest to transform the plumbing industry by establishing Hub Plumbing & Mechanical of Boston, MA and, more recently, introducing the concept of ‘Red Carpet’ service.

The public has responded to the reliable and luxurious service and the business has outgrown its original location.

“We understand the personal nature of inviting a plumber into your home, and the roll out of our ‘Red Carpet’ program has brought rave reviews from customers,” notes Wood. “We really wanted to take the plumbing industry to the next level. The stereotype of a plumber is a guy who shows up when he wants, sporting a grizzly beard and tattered, filthy clothes. We are transforming that image to a more professional, friendly and customer-centered approach.”

Hub’s ‘Red Carpet’ Service

Seven 2-man Hub crews service the Metro Boston area, rolling out their ‘Red Carpet’ at the convenience of their customers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Offering ‘real 24 service’ is one of the key components of Hub’s ‘Red Carpet’ program, where live receptionists manage and dispatch emergency calls to streamline responses.

Hub’s service technicians really do literally roll out the ‘Red Carpet’ for their customers, protecting floors as they lay out their tools of the trade, but only after donning stain-resistant booties to cover their work boots. Hub’s red carpet, emblazoned with the Hub logo, ties in with Hub’s use of red as a distinctive signature color that unifies their marketing efforts.

From Hub’s fleet of spotless, shiny red trucks (which are meticulously maintained mini rolling warehouses) to the crisp red and black uniforms worn by all Hub service technicians, Hub employs royal red, highlighted by superimposed gold lettering.

Hub’s ‘Red Carpet’ program emphasizes cleanliness and professionalism in an industry not particularly renowned for those traits. Wood points to the teamwork displayed by Hub’s employees as a key component of Hub’s ability to consistently deliver premium ‘Red Carpet’ service to their customers.

About Hub Plumbing & Mechanical

The company does not charge by the hour, but by the specific project. Hub Plumbing & Mechanical is available 24 hours a day and 7 seven days a week to provide immediate access and peace of mind. Dedicated 2nd and 3rd shift night dispatchers internally handle all calls at Hub Plumbing & Mechanical, not an answering service. The difference between the two enables Hub Plumbing & Mechanical to get real-time info on the customer 24/7 to expedite the call as efficiently as possible.

Hub Plumbing & Mechanical was established in 1999 and now includes a staff of seven 2-man crews and four administrative people. This full service plumbing company assists residential and commercial customers with code violations, sewer/drain clogs, garbage disposals, water heaters, water filtration, steam and hot water boilers, thermostats, leaky faucets, tub valves, gas pipes, appliance installation, and outside hose faucets.

Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc. is located at 70 Old Colony Avenue in South Boston, MA 02127. For more information about Hub Plumbing & Mechanical call 1-866-HUBPLUMBING (482-7586), email services@hubplumbing.com, or visit www.hubplumbing.com.
