He also discusses the importance of costume choices as an element of characterization, noting that a striking choice can leave a subconscious imprint of a character’s essence in the spectator’s mind: in Shutter Island, he made Dr. Cawley smoke a pipe, and in some scenes of the film he seems covered by a cloud of smoke, hiding something, with an aura of malice and mystery.[citation needed]

No original soundtrack was written for the film. Instead, Scorsese made use of his long time collaborator Robbie Robertson to create an ensemble of previously recorded material to use in the film. According to a statement on Paramount’s website: “The collection of modern classical music [on the soundtrack album] was hand-selected by Robertson, who is proud of its scope and sound. ‘This may be the most outrageous and beautiful soundtrack I’ve ever heard.’ [Robertson stated].”[8] The soundtrack album will be released on 2 February 2010.
